So the new Apple TV costs $99 – nearly $200 less than the old Apple TV – and the box is the size of two iPhones side-by-side, about one-fourth the size of the previous version. In one shot, that makes Apple TV a no-brainer purchase for many consumers. The price is about the same as dinner for two and wine at a P.F. Chang’s, and the box won’t have to find a chunk of space amid all the DVRs, DVD players and video game consoles piled by the TV.

Idk which is worse, actually writing that in an article, or actually spending $50 a person at PF changs. Both are insane rofl

however i will say, as an apple hater, the apple tv isn't that bad

The PF Changs by me stays packed, I mean you gotta wait to get seated even on a weekday evening packed. I've never eaten there, and I know about an equal number of people who hate it as love it. We're in a horrible recession and this place is still making a killing so they're obviously doing something very right. With that said the new Apple TV looks super sick.

Don't care too much about the ipod stuff, but since I've been looking into various media options recently I have to say the AppleTV announcement is pretty bad.

It's a Netflix/YouTube streamer? So is the Roku, which is cheaper. You can rent movies for $4.99? Netflix is cheaper. You can rent TV shows for $0.99? An antenna is $10. Its guts for being a media extender look to be pretty weak. The SageTV Home Theater 300 is much more robust and $150.

Seems like it's too pricey to be a low-end streamer and too weak to be a cheap extender. And I think the TV rental model is bound to fail. It may be moddable, but there are other devices that don't need to be modded around the same price point.

The Old Apple TV can run XBMC, so I'd imagine the new one will also be able to. XBMC for a Media Center UI >>>>>>> anything else by about 5,000 times. For that alone this should be a killer product.

AppleTV is fucking retarded. I don't understand the concept? Why is it 100 dollars? The thing probably costs a whole 5 dollars to make. Not to mention TVs are already rolling out with the features this thing offers, minus the 99 cent rentals, but fuck that anyways I could just watch it for free on Hulu or some shit. Fail device. That said, had this of been the original AppleTV they might of gained some share in this market.

The Old Apple TV ran XBMC because for the most part it was a computer, this is like a hub and would take some major hacking to get XBMC on it from what it looks like.

People like to eat expensive slop. Family restaurants like that around me are always packed. Their food sucks and they're not exactly cheap either.

If it allowed me to stream select channels that I WANT then I would pay $99 for it and up to $19.99 per month

maybe a 20 channel limit or something

unless you can get content packages that will compete with cable on price and selection, i dont really care.

I don't even have cable, i use an HTPC and a netflix HD subscription.

It is sad that joost never really took off and hulu is getting greedy.

You are making decisions based on big leaps of logic here. Do you also suspect it'll stream Hulu? What about MKV?

guys, I came here to bash the article writer and PF Changs, not discuss stupid apple products

I've been to PF Changs once, and I'll probably never go back. There was a wait as usually with those shitty ass restaurants, and the food was decent at best. of course the prices were more expensive than they should be, but if you are spending $50 a person, you deserve to get kicked in the balls. its not even worth half that, and there are plenty of GOOD restaurants you can eat at for less even.

hence why the writer is a fucking doucher

What exactly is different between the original crAppleTv and this one?
Smaller size and slightly cheaper (though still overpriced).

Some really good points that I found on the intertubes:

There is really only 3 ways for Apple TV to actually succeed:
1. iTunes offers a pricing model similar to Netflix (unlimited rentals for $5-$10/month but the available library for this needs to be HUGE to compete with Netflix and $10 seems to be the pricing barrier for these services [with Hulu Plus clearly being too expensive!])
2. Get Hulu and every other streaming provider to offer the content on the AppleTV (though Hulu seems to have a licensing problem that prevents them from bringing their TV content to the TV): Netflix + Hulu + OTA on the TV and you can cancel cable/satellite … very nice value proposition to consumers!
3. Turn their precious “AppleTV” into a faux game console – buyers likely already own an iPhone (or iPod Touch) which could be a totally new game controller (unlike the Wii or MSFT’s/Sony’s copycat controllers) allowing for a new genre of games. With its motion sensors the iPhone/iPod could even act as motion controllers! The iPhone also has a ton of available games that could probably be easily adapted to display on the AppleTV with the iphone/ipod acting as controller. A racing game with the iphone as controller (the phone screen could be the back-view mirror) could be really cool. So could be an RPG. MMORPG finally on the TV!

I thought Apple TV was a media extender-like device, allowing you to playback audio/video content from network shares (plus some apps for online streaming). Kind of like the Western Digital TV Live Plus. Isn't $99 on par with the market for something like that?

I'm assuming it offers shitty container/codec support and it probably only works with an iTunes library. Someone tell me what I'm missing.

Leaps of logic? it will have Netflix, and I have zero doubt somebody will port XBMC to it. And if I'm not mistaken it will have native Hulu support added down the road. There's no way XBMC won't show up on this. There are already people in the XBMC community who have said as soon as it comes out they'll begin work. It might take them 6 days, or it might take 6 months. But it'll happen.

I could literally shit out a turd and steve jobs could slap an apple logo on it and apple fanboys would be running over themselves to buy it. They're that retarded.

Then why didn't the Newton sell? Oh yeah because it sucked, your analogy is retarded and untrue. Also the original Apple TV didn't sell all that well, so that makes you doubly retarded.

Do I need to try PF Changs so I know how to compare it to Apple TV? Does the hundred bucks include the TV (or wine for that matter)? If I spend $50 at PF Changs will I get more food than would fill the space of two iPhones? Two iPhones isn't a whole lot of food. With Apple TV is there anything worth watching? Porn? Stuff exploding?

"The burning librarian?"
"The mudslide hitting the school?"
"The brain-damaged boy playing with the puppies?"

if there is one brand that ATOT hates as much as Apple, it might be PF Chang's.
