The head of Argentina's navy has been replaced following the seizure in West Africa of a naval training ship and its 300 crew amid a debt dispute.

The Argentine government is holding an inquiry into who was responsible for allowing the Libertad to stop in Ghana two weeks ago.

Creditors say they will not release the ship until Argentina repays money owed to them from a default in 2001.

A lot of countries have sailing ships for training cadets and for goodwill tours. I know the US Coast Guard has its own tall ship.

I do think it is funny. The vision of a repo man showing up at the dock and evicting military personel from their ship is hilarious.

Obviously modern naval officers don't need to know a lot about sailing, but I think that serving on a ship like that is sort of a "turn boys into men" experience.

You all forget the the USS Constitution is still a commissioned ship and yes it occasionally goes to sea. I find it cooll that if all hell breaks loose we can send the Constitution somewhere to deliver a broadside cannon blast. AC/DC for those about to rock style.

Constitution can't sail under full sail without falling apart though. They have done mostly cosmetic restoration, making it truly sea worthy would entail rebuilding a large portion of it.

I'm not saying that its in war condition but it does occasionally sail on its own, I saw on the local news it went out to sea on its sails in August to commemerate its aniversary(?) I can't remember the specific detail of the story.

Yeah..... Somehow I doubt, regardless of who we owe what, that I will ever see a US aircraft carrier being "detained" like in the OP.

It was commissioned for and fought in the War of 1812. That may provide a clue?

Constitution was launched in 1797, not specifically for the War of 1812. The Humpherys frigates were remarkable pieces of naval engineering. When captained by a competent commander they were more than a match for any British ship except a ship of the line (which they could outrun). Surprised the hell out of the Royal Navy.

There is a good book called "Six Frigates" that tells their history.

They brought it out to commermorate its victory against the Guerriere. The two ships got entangled to each other and the Guerriere's cannon bounced off the sides of the Constitution, this is where the "Old Iron Sides" name came from. Awsome reason to bring it out. Wikipedia has a picture of it sailing that day, I'd bet it was in Boston Harbor but it still looked regal.

The falkland islands were uninhabited when the first Europeans arrived there...How can you steal something if it belonged to nobody at the time ???
