WTF is wrong with these clowns? I won't buy an Apple product because a) I don't want to get roped into iTunes and all that jazz and b) I've made way too much fun of Apple stuff and owners over the years.

But there's NO WAY IN FREAKING HELL I'm paying MORE for something than the comparable Apple product.

Either a reading or math fail on the OP.
I wont even get into the kilodollar issue, cuz no one cares about that. But if you read the article thats not 1000 dollars, thats 1000 EURO'S. Which means 1,350 dollars.

Is LG fucking insane or just stupid?

You have to subtract the 19% VAT to arrive at the $1K number...

I'm going to call $699 subsidized with a data plan on TMobile.

Tablet components are pricey, large capacitive touchscreen, high tech batteries, state of the art flash memory... Apple secured consumer friendly prices on those items with large long term contracts with the suppliers, particularly the screens and memory.

Yeah, I'm sure you can just take off that 19% cuz you freakin want to.
And have fun with Interpol.

Tmobile is not known for super expensive products so I dont think they will pick this up. 699 plus a 2 year contract just isnt their style. LG priced themselves out of business. Bastards. They coulda had a basic tablet for a reasonable price and been a serious player in the market.

You need to trust me and my sources a little better dude...

I'm saying the thing will retail for the equivalent of $1K here if you take the VAT off and convert to USD.

As far as TMobile, they're in trouble with no iPad to sell, this will be their only 10" tablet so far, until Samsung releases their 10" variant.

I noticed Best Buy took down their $1200 Xoom pre order page, even if they re price it at $799, they're out of the game.

One would think it would be cheaper since they create their own screens

Yeesh. Today's tablets are not worth even half that. Aside from slightly useful as a couch surfing device, they're pretty much useless. A laptop will beat all tablets on price, performance, productivity, etc.

Well, I have a feeling that the iPad 2 is going to be $600 for the base model, a $100 jump. Still makes you wonder what these other guys are smoking, though. Surely to God they can make a nice $500 tablet that competes, because we all know how much Jobs makes off his stuff.

And it weighs 4x more, is bulky as hell, and will boil your nuts while it sits on your lap.

I think 300 dollars is the most I'd pay for a current generation tablet. Anything more and I'd buy a laptop which gives me way more functionality and performance.

Call me when they hit $500 (unsubsidized) for something that's:

A) Dual Core
B) Comes with both WiFi and 3/4G, with data plans OPTIONAL
C) 9-10" display with 1280x800 or better resolution and slim bezel
D) Gets at least 10 hours of battery life
E) Has USB / SD ports (eSATA or USB 3.0 would be awesome), and HDMI out
F) Has internal Bluetooth and supports physical keyboards

Until then, I'm all set with my notebook and my smartphone. I will admit, tablets right now are tempting. I know it'd be nothing more than a toy, though.

Sucks. So far Honeycomb is being priced out of the market. My interest remains firmly with the Playbook, with an eye toward a price announcement on the webOS Touchpad.

^^^ This.
I'm a gadget freak so I'd love to get a tablet to play with but its nothing more than a surf the net, play games toy.
I spent $900 for a 11" MBA this little machine is awesome.
Its 2.3 lbs so I can't see a tablet being that useful to me.

Am I unreasonable in thinking that we should be able to pick up tablets for $300-$500 (unsubsidized)?

i think these companies think they can sucker businesses into buying $1000 tablets because i dont know anyone who would use a tablet enough to justify paying that amount.

I suspect once the full round of honeycomb tablets makes it into the market we will finally see some price depression. Or at least I hope so. 1000 dollars is twice what I am willing to pay for one of these.

Thats all there is to it. No way those things cost anywhere near a grand to make. They probably have a 10,000 percent markup, well, maybe a thousand percent. Soon as theres plenty of real competition prices will shoot down. They were just hoping enough people are foolish and buy the overpriced model for an easy profit.

Being an iPad owner, I thought for sure that I would have moved onto an Android tablet by now. But now with the iPad 2 on the horizon, it looks like that's what I'm going to be upgrading to. There simply isn't anything else that's competitive.

iPad 2 is going to be cheaper, doesn't require a plan, has an excellent screen, has great apps, looks fantastic, functions fantastic, and is probably coming sooner than a comparably priced Android. They've got Price, Performance, and Speed (availability) all covered.
