LoJack Not Worth Jack

My son just purchased a Laptop online, so I started checking into theft protection.

I found a Product called Computrace LoJack for Laptops

It costs $49.99 for 1 year or $99.99 for 3 years.

They promise to recover your laptop in 30 days if it is stolen.

Pretty good deal! 😀

But what happens if they can't recover in 30 days?
If your computer isn't recovered within 30 days of you reporting it stolen, you?ll receive a full refund for your purchase price of the software.

Just send in your proof of purchase for your computer and our software. If Computrace LoJack for Laptops was installed and activated on your computer, and had called our Monitoring Center at least once before being stolen, we?ll give you a full refund for your purchase price of the software ? regardless of the service term remaining.
After you purchase, install, activate, call monitoring center at least once, report stolen and send in proof of purchase; you are back where you would have been if you didn't purchase LoJack in the first place! :frown:

They claim they recover 3/4 of the stolen computers, but they do not have much economic incentive to recover any.

I can see the cops using their full extent to recover your lap top in a timely fashion.

SWAT, K9 Units, Sharp shooters, helicopters, forensic scientists, and the bomb squad. They don't stand a chance!

Fortunately surge protector companies do not just replace or reimburse you for the surge protector if your computer is taken out by lightning.

Computrace is worthless. My company spent tens of thousands of $$$'s supporting them from the beginning and we ended up dumping them this year. Out of a dozen or more stolen laptops only one was recovered and that will be in a NYPD evidence locker for a few years. By the time we get it back it will be worthless. It can also be bypassed really easily.

Buy insurance.
When it gets stolen, report it stolen and get a new one.
(I honestly have no idea if insurance works this way, but it sounds good 😀)

Just make sure the important stuff on it is encrypted with some strong encryption with a strong password.

i think you can get extensions on your homeowners insurance to cover these things for a little more
(cameras laptops etc)

My mother-in-law had her laptop in the trunk of her car when another car plowed into it. Then it spent the night in the tow yard in the pouring rain. Her laptop, camera, suitcases, clothes, etc were all covered by homeowners insurance.
