I'm in the market for these exact speakers... For Seatte-ites, Bellevue, Federal Way, and Tukwilla (SouthCenter) all are out of stock.. only the new series of speakers are in... Gotta check the other seattle stores... :)

Razorguts here, the originator of this deal/thread. One thing that confuses me is if the new 5300s are *not* meant to replace the 680s, then why are the 680s on clearance? Although I said originally that this may be just a fluke clearance deal (YMMV), Ive seen too many posts, both here and at FW, of ppl finding the same deal in several other states.

I wonder if logitech is planning on not manufacturing the 680s anymore (hiss problem, maybe?) and already has a newer set in the works... ?

Turn them off (leave them plugged in) and hold the input and settings buttons for a few seconds. The version should show up on the display.

To those who haven't read my other thread on these speakers, all three sets hissed, regardless of the inputs I used (analog, coax digital, optical digital). This hiss did not rise or fall with the volume adjustment in windows or on the unit itself. Before you blame the Soundstorm they were plugged into, they also hissed while muted AND while unplugged from all sources. My old Cambridge Soundworks desktop theater, cheap PC works 2.1 speakers, and my H/K and Denon receivers are all hiss free. One bad set, bad luck. 2 bad sets is very bad luck. 3 bad sets are crappy speakers.

The satellites did sound pretty nice hooked up to my receiver though. :)

How do these compare to Z640s at low volume? I usually run my speakers at about 5-10% of max volume. I am after sound quality and not "power." I'm not too knowledgable on audio stuff. Any information is appreciated. BTW the Z640s can be had for $65 shipped, and I'm running on a Soundstorm board (a7n8x dlx 2.0). Thanks!

I have a set of 1.03 and they have zero hiss. I have not turned them way up recently to see if the bass rattles, but when I bought them they were fine.

At the time, I bought the 2 klipsch 5.1 models and they had hiss and the z680 blew them away in a comparison.

I have the 640's. They are decent and will do the trick. They are not THX certified, but do sound nice when not listening at a high volume. Distortion comes in when they start to crank up, and they only have about 15% of the potential power that the 680's have (7 watt sattelites vs 50 watt)

But as you said you aren't after power, so the 640's should do you nicely... you can probably find them for cheaper than 65 at a B&M if you look around, I bought mine over a year ago and got em for about 70 shipped, so I can't believe they still cost that much

Decent deal, but I'm almost willing to bet that at least one store will be offering the 640's in the $50 range (possibly AR) between Black Friday and Christmas, though. I'd hold tight and see what next month's sale fliers bring us.

Ok...here goes.

Purchased Z-680s from Best Buy Woodland Hills/Canoga Park for $199.99 (they have two in stock).

Went across the street to Circuit City and PMed at 199.99 and 10% (-$20) for 179.99 out the door. Nice deal you say...well hold on to your panties...

CC has a $70 MIR that printed out with the register receipt. Hiss, whistle, snap, crackle and pop...I don't care.

$109.99 total +tax for Logitech Z-680s! This is my best deal of the year! (Only because my Dell Planar 17" probably won't ship until January 2004)

Good luck.

PS. Woodland Hills = 2 in stock. You must ask for them as they are not out on display. I was in BB Porter Ranch on Saturday and they too had 2 in stock.
Note: This was not my original idea, but I acted on a FW suggestion. Just trying to give the proper credit. No offense to AT'ers.

It's my understanding that CC recently modified the written terms of its rebate policy, specifically with regard to the effect of price matching, and now takes out of the rebate proceeds the amount of the price match. I would therefore anticipate that you may run into problems with this particular rebate, as the price match reduction appears to have been much more than the value of the rebate, but that is still a fantastic deal on some great speakers.

Edit: Here's the language I'm talking about, straight from the CC rebate form for these speakers: "Advertised rebate amount assumes payment of Circuit City's before-rebate advertised price. Circuit City reserves the right to reduce the fulfilled rebate amount based on price adjustments and/or price matches made on qualifying items."

Hey, can't hurt to give the rebate a shot anyway. I hope they pay up!

Hey, I'm very happy at $179.99 :). If the rebate works, then :D.

For all who care: They sound great. Some hiss. but I can not hear it over:

1) my case fans
2) my neighbors TV
3) my "neighbor buster" mp3 playlist---You know the best selections from Tool, Matallica, Linkin Park...you got the idea.
4) my wife bitch'in at me
5) my microwave, refrigerator, dishwasher or the dog that barks at 2:00am every morning.

SoundStorm digital audio with Monster ILS-200 Digital Fiber Optic cable, Monster XP speaker wire. Done for now!

MyRep:
Thanks for your post. I saw it within seconds of your posting and ran and got the last set, from both BB and CC. I did the PM thing at CC - but ended up going to Northridge for the pick up.

One set for me, and one for a gift. What a great deal!
Thanks!

So, final cost was $179.99 + tax (and TN tax is a whopping 9.25%!!!) = $197.54.

Since when did the Tax in TN jump to 9.25%? Man I just moved out west from there last year and it was only 8.25% for retail sales tax. And part of that was city tax.

I have 1.1.2s... zero hiss here.... don't think its much of a concern with the newer sets now. The older hissing sets have been phased out... plus if you get a crappy set, talk to logitech and they can get you new ones from what I hear...

Sales tax here has been 9.25% for about a year now, possibly longer... it's the second highest in the country...

I used to live in Nashville, and yes, you did have 9.25% Sales Tax, but don't forget that you don't pay any Income Tax! I order all my expensive stuff online, so it benefitted me a lot more than here in Virginia where I pay 4.5% Sales Tax, but Income Tax on top of that.

Incidentally, I got the speakers at CC with PM no problem. Went back to get another set for the basement and they said Corporate told them not to PM.

Yes, but isn't it true that some states paying income tax do not pay sales tax on items such as food and clothing? We're paying sales tax on anything and everythign here... :(
