Special circumstances:

I have a Soundstorm. Analog output is supposed to suck. Z680's are digital (right?)
One of my Z560's rear speakers died. So I unplugged the other one. So it is only 2.1 at this point.
I can get the Z680's brand new for about $150 USD

What would you guys suggest?

I have the z-680's. They are amazing in every aspect except one, the slight static you hear when they aren't playing anything, although it is very quiet and doesnt normally bother me I would rather it not be there.

So if you are anal about very small noises then don't get the 680's, if not, they are great.

that's typical for a non-digital connection though... how are yours connected?
either that or the Logtech amp is just crappy.. who knows really....

I've heard of that static when not playing anything about the Z680's a LOT...I'm highly concerned about it. In fact its probably the main reason I haven't already picked them up...

I sit pretty close to the speakers too...

The static can be avoided in a very simple but crude way: turn the speakers off when you're not listening to stuff.

It really is a non-issue when you're listening to anything, but if you sit real close with nothing playing, you can notice it, but it's certainly not horrible.

and yes, $150 is obscenely cheap, so even if you don't get on with them, you could probably sell them on for more XD

and you won't need to sit close to the Z-680's, infact, you wouldn't want to since they are a beastly set of speakers, offering a very loud and non-distorted sound even at high volumes, and they look the part.

People have argued about the quality of different PC speakers for ages, and it's obvious they aren't professional audio equipment, but seriously, where are you going to get a better set of speakers for $150, with a Dolby Digital and DTS decoder, remote control, coax and optical inputs, 5.1 surround? I don't think you could, I know I couldn't, my Z-680's cost me about £270 when I bought them a while ago.

Just use a regular RCA cable for like $3. You're not going to notice a difference for a 6' cable.
If you're just one of those people that is satisfied with the placebo gains, then get the 75Ohm cables from www.partsexpress.com for about $10.

Scouzer, I've a Z560 and Soundstorm (A7N8X-Deluxe).
I personally would not buy another Logitech Speaker set (at least, until they build one with tweeters)
Too bad my Z560 is still fine after 3 years :)

Why?
1. Sloppy bass
2. Weak highs (no tweeters)

Overall, I think the cross-over is not tuned correctly.
I'd get a Klipsch GMX 5.1 ($150) before Z680 (or 5500 for that matter)

the gmx, really bigpow? Personally i like logitech speakers, they are pretty good quality for the buck, and the 680's are no exception. I have a set of 560's that dont' hiss, and my roommate had 680's that didn't hiss. Save a nice midrange hometheater, i'm plenty content with my speakers.

I just have not heard good things about the GMX, the one guy i know who bought them hated them, granted this isn't an educated perspective.

I love my Z-680's... The bass is great for what I listen too... but the above post mentioning boomy bass is right.. but if that bothers you you can always turn the sub volume down

oogabooga, GMX may look fugly... but it's still a Klipsch none-the-less.
I had a Promedia Ultra 5.1 before the Z560... boy oh boy, what a difference! Tight precise bass, very clear highs & mids
Too bad my PM5.1 broke twice within a month (Reliability is an issue with Klipsch, but they have the best customer support ever! It didn't cost me anything!)

Go to the Klipsch website, they have the GMX on sale now!

(and no, I don't work for them)
(and yes, I wish I had not bought the Klipsch before Logitech, I would be happier not knowing how good Klipsch sounds like)

I ended up going Audigy 2 Value + Z5300. All I can say is this is a whole new world. I only now realize how muddy and crappy Z560 bass really is.

My Z560's bass was so bad it was annoying, I always had it on as low as it can go. Now I have Z5300's sub on max :) PERFECT!!!

I have a GMX and they are awesome. Regarding the static taht you hear, the Klipsch gets that when nothing is playing, but the amp stops sending power to the speakers so it takes out the static! Only thing that ucks though is that there is no remote control.

Scouzer, how about the mids & highs on Z5300 compared to Z560?
Maybe I'd go for Z5300/5500 instead of PM5.1/GMX when my Z560 is busted... hmm

any other cards good for z680 ecept ZS? How u would hook up fiber optic digital anyway without the front panel of Platinum Pro? It has to be light to light right?
