Hell yes! I think anyone that says they're the best obviously either:
1. Only speakers they've ever heard
2. only plays games with them
3. likes lots of bass that drowns out the music.
4. likes crappy tinny speakers(yes it's a tincan) with no definition
Otherwise it's not bad for $50, but definately not for anything more.

Some better speakers include Creative Inspire T5400(absolutely kick logitech's arse), Altec Lansing ATP5(4.1), Altec Lansing 251.

The 251's have a problem with "hissing" and I have seen too many say the sub is worthless.

Got mine for $47 w/ free shipping from Amazon, so far so good. Not great for music, but that's what my real stereo is for.

No, the Z-640s are analog only.

whats the consensus on the Logitech Z-640 vs. the Creative T5400
do either of them have SPDIF?
how much extra do i have to shell out to get SPDIF. can i get 5.1 w/ SPDIF for under 100?
is there much of a difference going digital?
are the only speaker systems with SPDIF the ones with decoders like the 680

S/PDIF is useful on SoundStorm motherboards because you can bypass the crappy onboard DACs.

It outputs the sound as digital rather than analog so you don't have to use the "crappy" digital-to-analog convertors (DACs) on the motherboard.

im gonna get a SB Audigy 2 ZS
so it has SPDIF
but to take advantage of that I need speakers with SPDIF
so Im asking for SPDIF 5.1 speaker recommendations, hopefully under 100
this has nothing to do with motherboards

The Audigy 2's DACs are very good; I doubt there's a single multimedia system with SPDIF inputs that can match it so using the analog connections is the best choice for optimal sound quality and surround audio in games.

I have a pair got them for $47 AR from newegg awhile back. They are decent for music and good for games if your any sort of audiophile these aren't for you though. I have the bass set to as low as it can go. I would bet you can get better speakers for under 100 I didn't cause these were cheap and easy and had alright sound.

what speakers do you guys reccomend that have S/PDIF?

I would go straight to a surround reciever if you can. Most surround in a box 5.1 systems will sound better than PC speakers.

My quick take on the Z-640's - the bass is a bit powerful, even if it's turned all the way down. Turned all the way up...well, it makes my monitor shimmer. It's an aperature grille monitor, and the bass makes the little vertical wires vibrate. So it's pretty powerful I'd say. :)
I usually will use the Soundstorm control panel for my NF7-S to turn down the bass end of the audio spectrum to make it sound "normal" - and so that it doesn't drive anyone else in the house nuts.
For the price though, I'd say they're pretty nice.
