Hi,

I bought these speakers the other day and on the screen, the glossy plastic part, it looks like tiny scratches almost like smudge everywhere on it. I am wondering if its a fluke or if they are all like that... I wanted close up pictures of your pods to see if mine is "normal" or not. I don't want to open mine all up to find out I need to exchange my set. Also, I'm going to be using these for my dvd player and not my PC, think I should still get these? How do they sound? I might settle for the Z-5300e if their all ruff looking like mine...

thanks guys,
:)

Please explain where the problem is? Is it on the screen of the pod or on the speakers?

If it's the screen of the pod, maybe there is a plastic protector on it that peels off.

I would exchange it. They are expensive and you want to be totally happy with them?

btw they sound great.

If you're hooking up to a DVD player, I would definately not recommend a z-5300 set. The z-5500s are the best computer speaker option for this due to having a DD decoder. If you hooked up any other set without a decoder via analog, you'd be in trouble unless your DVD player is very nice and has 5.1 analog out.

If you wanted an alternative to the z-5500s, there are some nice HTIB systems in the $400 to $500 range, but I think the z-5500s are the best option in the pricerange you're talking about.
This would be the best HT type system that would compete in price to the z-5500s. I haven't heard it though, only read about it so I can't give you any personal experience advice.

If you think you might be upgrading your system in the future though, gong with an entry level HTIB set instead of computer speakers would leave a lot more options to you down the road (as opposed to having to ditch the whole set for the z-5500s)

Good luck!

thank you, you guys are great help. I think I'll try to exchange my z-5500 and try another one... I'm just afraid the other one's screen will be ruff (smudge scratches) also. Then I will look foolish going a again lol.

I was also thinking about the Athena Micra 6 and a decent Pioneer receiver, but that would cost almost twice as much... I'm all confused now lol.

Anyway if you think you can help, keep posting :)

thanks again!

If you want to be able to use any set of PC speakers with your DVD player, you could buy the Creative DDTS-100 decoder. It goes inline between your speakers and digital source, decoding any DTS-ES and Dolby Digital EX signals along the way. With that said, the Z-5500s are said to be very good speakers so you could just exchange them if the scratches are bad or if they bother you.

yes, thanks.. But, if their almost all like that I don't want to exchange them over and over again. I am waiting for people who got them to see if I have a good chance of getting a good pod (not scratched).

Yeah, you could definately get a Creative decoder and pair them with computer speakers, but I personally think that's kind of a bad investment if you have the budget to just go up to an entry level HT set.

KLH, I've read some great things about the Athena Micra speakers.
I have a Pioneer 1014 receiver that I got from best buy for $287 for a floor model. I'm liking it so far.

A basic HTIB set that you'd be able to check out at Circuit City etc. are the Onkyo sets. The 780s would be a good set.

Another good option would be rocket tykes. I have some higher end rocket speakers myself and like them a lot. The guys at av123 are great if you want to e-mail them any questions about their products (or any other HT questions).

Oh, canadian, eh?

I know a good amount of speaker manufacturers are in Canada... like Paradigm I think (I could be way off)
I really don't know if that ends up getting better deals to the consumer, but it might be worth a look to see how much a pair of Paradigm Atoms are up there. They're $200/pair down here. I don't know if three pairs would fit into your budget with a refurb receiver... and then you'd still have to worry about a sub.

I know Fluance is up there too, but not sure on Canadian pricing either.
