Yeah, the SQ of the Klipsch really suffers b/c of this...?

You guys are silly. Don't base your opinion on stupid responses in this thread. If you are serious about paying $200 - $300 for some nice multimedia speakers, then get off your butt and buy both systems from Best Buy and audition them in your HOME (not in the store, since subwoofers are never placed correctly at BB). I know if I were about to drop $300 on speakers, the least I could do is make sure I am going to be satisfied with them.

Both systems are great. Price shouldn't be a huge factor, since the difference is less than $50 and you will be paying $250 - $300. The Klipsch at Dell a few weeks ago were MUCH cheaper than this, but that doesn't matter either.

After deciding what speaker systems sounds better you have to make other decisions. Do you care about the remote/decoder, or will you be using this primarliy on your computer? If yes, do you want the remote/decoder included in the system or do you like the Klipsch enough to spend another $50 - $100 for decoder?

As for the reliability of these systems, I'd say its not a factor. The old Klipsch ProMedia 5.1's had an amp problem which was fixed and is no longer an issue with the Ultra's. Chances are the failure rates are somewhat equal for both systems.

LONG STORY SHORT: Before buying $300 speakers, don't listen to people on the internet, LISTEN TO THE SPEAKERS! (Lol, one would think this is common sense)
DING DING DING! We have a winner! Turns out there ARE intelligent people on the internet after all.

whats better? the 5500'sor the 680's ?? (~$235 shipped @ tigerdirect.com)

The 5500's are the "new model year" 680's. They are pretty much the same. The only differences are that the 5500's have a ten inch sub compared to the 680's eight inch sub and the 5500's can decode 96/24 DTS. The satellites have a slightly different design as well, but they use the same drivers.

The Klipsch Promedia 5.1 Ultras are undoubtedly better. Why get these when you can buy a set like the Ultras?

Only in your dreams! The Klipsch's have no digital decoder and no remote.

And this somehow makes the Klipschs sound worse? Um, okay....

I have never heard the Kilpsh, but I have 2 sets of Logitec and love them.

The bass will be very heavy. I own some 5300's and I had to put a blanket underneith it because It shook the floor of my living room. Then at the request of the other members of my family I had to plug the hole coming out of the sub with a blanket due to it shaking the house.

I suggest you read your manual as to why this is not the most intelligent idea.

Well I'm happy for you, although my response wasn't directed at you entirely. Nevertheless, my advice for undecideds remains the same. Buy the systems and audition them, before making a decision.

IT DEPENDS on your use for the speakers!
Digital decoding != (or require) a nice setup.

If you're connecting these speakers to a computer, then a decoder is a moot point since the sound card will be handling this.
If you are connecting to an Xbox/DVD player then the Logitech system offers a very nice and simple way to connect to such devices.

Just because you feel DD is very important for you, doesn't mean it is so for everyone else.

I have an Audigy 2 ZS card which does the decoding. Why do I need inferior speakers with a decoder? How about finding a hot deal on a clue, would ya?

no need to be offended, a simple "ur logitech sux0rs. klipsch rules." would work also

Just about every review I've read on the 5500s has stated they are the absolute, bar none best sound quality computer speakers, even beating the Klipsch. If anyone would like to link a review where the reviewer actually prefers the Klipsch feel free, but I've never come across one, and I've looked. These were also one of very few things to get a perfect score of 10 from Maximum PC magazine.

Amen

I have the older 4.1 z-560 and I love them and I also got a great deal. I have also heard these, they sound a little better then the z-560 plus yo u get the decoding and the remote if you need/want that.

And you say this like your word is god. Ive had the Promedias, OVER RATED! No DIGITAL.

Maybe we can compare these to my Energy Speakers eh?

This is a GOOD buy!

Aww damn... why'd you have to post the new price - now I have no choice but to buy these! 😛

Oh well, order placed... Time to replace my $50 Z-640s 🙂

I see alot of people also miss another use with these speakers. Who says they need to be used strictly for PC? I would think that if you hooked them up to a dvd player would make a damn good HT set up. Recievers (THX) are atleast $500+ for a good one. Speakers THX cert would be atleast $200+ for the set, A almost 200 watt sub that punches like the logitechs well theres another $300+.

Here for under 3 you get a set with matched speakers, thx, DD, DTS, remote, and will shater your winddows. YEAH you dont get hall, concert, tuner, and other BS but really when I had all that I never used it ever. So for the price great HT set IMO of couse.

If I had the cash I would get these not only for my computer but for my bedroom and living room and shake the whole house (and my neighors house) apart.

Time for a Klipsch hijack! I finally got a good deal on a pair of these, and I moved them into my living room so I could move my Klipsch Promedia Ultra 5.1s into my computer room. Well, as for the argument that these Logitechs are comparable to the Klipsches....sorry, no. I was really hoping for something decent, but it was clear as soon as I got it cranking that the fidelity on the Z-5500s is a few significant steps below the Ultras all the way up and down the range of sound. On top, it's no contest, I guess tweeters actually DO make a difference. And as for the sub, well, I didn't realize what people meant by boomy bass until I got this pounding. Compared to the gorgeous pitched lows of the Ultras, this annoying vibration is disgusting. These are going back to the store, if I get a second set, it will be ANOTHER set of Ultras, maybe some Gigaworks if the deal is right. Don't waste your money on these.

doublejbass-I hope you know that you can adjust the sub 😛

I use my z-680s in conjunction with my xbox and my computer, and I find them to be amazing for the price point. If you added another 50-100+ for a decoder for your Klipsches these wouldn't even be close to the same price range anymore.

Not to mention I have yet to hear a review, just like an above poster, saying the Klipsches were all that much better. Most said, that I read, that they were pretty much equal in sound quality.

Like many people said, Z5500 are awesome speakers. Especially the 5500's, i love the bass (substantially better than the 680). In fact, i sold my 680's in favor of the 5.1 Ultra's provided by klipsch. I lost something, but gain something that i liked much better: Sound Quality. The Decoder was an awesome feature, but the bass sounded way too high. The Z-5500 catered to my taste much better, however i'm missing the mid-range sounds. So right now, on one of my computers i have a z-5500, and my other one, i have a klipsch 5.1 Ultra's w/ the Creative DDTS-100 (decoding purposes). This is completely subjective, but I love both of them. My taste follows the Ultra's more, but it doesn't completely blow out the z-5500's. I'm keeping both of them. They're both great PC speakers. btw, i got the z5500 for 199 at the retail access site, if you know someone with the retail access, buy it!
