Logitech Z-2300

Well, I didn't splurge and buy new speakers, but someone else was nice enough to get me some refurbed Z-2300, which I finally got around to plugging into my Onboard Realtek (newer model, but ya, I know...). These replace my ancient 40W-ish Altec Lansing ACS33 speakers whcih I've used for 5 years. My first impression was that the subwoofer "si hueg." So, after about an hour setting them up (I like neater wires), I tried out my usual playlist. I definately notice the low (missing) mid-range that everyone's talked about, but where is this monstrous bass I've heard so much about? I have the bass on the remote at max and it's almost like it's less than my 40W-ish ones. So, is something up or am I just getting used to it still? Also, the highs definately do come out more (dis-proportionately more).

Also, just double checking. I have no space for the dumpster sized woofer as it is, so would there be any problems having it under my desk about 2 feet from my tower?

*Gave them 10 more minutes, I take back the bass being weaker, but I still don't see where this boomy, monstrous bass that is still too bassy even with the knob all the way down is coming from. My old set had boomy/thuddy bass compared to these.

*Gave them an hour, they are definately crisper and not muddled like my oldies. Still, the highs stick out a bit too much. Bass is nice and kind of warm.

Logitechs are known for being very non-linear (not accurate, peaky in certain parts of the bass spectrum). I suspect your Altec Lansing ASC33s were even peakier and has the "one note that cuts through the walls and annoys the neighbors" type "bass."

Anyway, as you move up the audio chain, your preconception of bass starts to change. It becomes more what you feel (the kick in your chest) than that 90hz upperbass peak that hides the fact that there actually is no bass.

Well, two days on, the lack of mid-range is definately becoming apparent. Still, sounds are way more clear than my old pieces of bleep. Can barely hear many of the instruments that though muddled, were pretty audible on the old ones. Also, I do notice the base being a bit thumpy when I move away from my seat; this was true for my old set. This is probably the case because I'm riding my subwoofer (if my chair was 4 inches lower I would be).

🙂No can do, was a birthday gift and we all know the laws of courtesy😛. They're still better than my old craps, so at least that can hold me over till I score (become not cheap enough) to get something nicer.

z-2300 is a good set, sure the mid range is on the weak side but for the price after rebate it's worth it. In your case: FREE, you definitely got a good birthday gift.

Trust me you can go all out and get a Klipsche or others, but none will sound better than a properly setup home theater system.

I'll take some more of it back. Watched my first DVD on these speakers, "Magnolia", sound was a-m-a-z-i-n-g. Everything was very directional, crisp, and the music was super clean. Guess I gotta go back and check out my bit-rate for my CD rips (already at 192 with windows media player format, shall I go for loss-less?...).
