Why do all your pictures link to "freeimagehosting.net"? And they also take forever to load.

On topic:
I would never consider using a pair of computer speakers if I wanted really good sound. I have a set of Klipsch Promedia 2.1 on my desktop, and they're alright. But when I get around to pairing my HDTV and HTPC with a set of speakers, I'm going to go the speakers+receiver route - much better sound out of bookshelf speakers.

I'm never buying another Klipsch product after my ProMedia 2.1s died out of warranty. One of the two channels just stopped working. And this is a very common problem. Klipsch products simply aren't reliable.

I could see that happening. My left channel seems to be weaker than my right channel. It will also cut out if the cord isn't oriented properly in the back (weird, right?). I don't think I'd ever get another pair of computer speakers again, that's for sure. Stick with headphones on a computer or hook it into a receiver and use good speakers.

No speaker system specifically designed for use with computers can ever really be called high-end, but within the spectrum of speakers designed for use with computers, there is certainly a range of prices and qualities.

I use to own a set of the Klipsch Pro-Media 5.1 speakers. I got rid of them as they were too bright and caused fatigue.

My GF has the Logitech Z-2300s. They are decent, especially for the price. I do like the rolled-off bass they seem to have. Very pleasing. The satellites are nothing special.

I personally use a 8-year-old Boston Acoustics BA7800 setup. It is still going strong and is much better thanthe Klipsch and Logitech systems but still has plenty of room for improvement.

Edit: I don't think the OP is spam. It's a damned thorough review by a loyal audiophile who takes it seriously. Bravo.

Thanks for supporting my effort GTaudiophile. Buy the way I like your name

used receiver w/ digital inputs: $50
Polk Monitor 40s: $100 /pr

For $150 the above will destroy any self-powered PC speaker setup. Period. Add a Polk Audio PSW10 sub for $100 if you want to rattle the windows.

Very good alternative suggestion. Thanks MagickMan.

Logitech = Bose for geeks

Yeah, but at a fifth of the price. :p

I have a pair of Monitor40's and they have no low end to speak of.

I'm pleased with the Z-5500 set I picked up a few months ago for ~$250 for my computer/XBox 360/HD cable box. Does everything I want it to and more and the Logitech control panel doesn't take up as much space as a receiver - space is the biggest issue right now in the place that I have it. The sub at 188 watts RMS can do some damage.

Bookshelf's have this limitation, they cannot go as low down the frequency range as a 2.1 with a dedicated subwoofer can.

And yeah, Logitech is 10x value for money than BOSE. to me
BOSE --> BUY OTHER SOUND EQUIPMENT

I have these:
http://www.swanspeaker.com/products/products.aspx?cid=5&sid=0&pid=24

And used to have Z2300's. They're not bad speakers, the bass is ridiculously loud, very high power. They'll shake your entire house at quite low levels, which is mostly problematic if anything.

Satellites are just ok.. the z2300 is GREAT for gaming though. I'd definitely consider z5500's for my basic home cinema. But for music and general computer... meh, I'll take the Swans.

(I live in China so a pair of those Swans retails for LESS than the z2300 since HiVi make them).

That might be true, but you could easily solve that problem by pairing a subwoofer with your bookshelf speakers.

So you're not using any speakers with your HDTV & HTPC now? Moving through the history of film chronologically, and still in the silent era?

Absolutely

I have the TV speakers to work with at the moment. I'll be getting external speakers sometime later this year.

No, if you want a high end 2.1 sound system you hook the digital out from your PC into a nice DAC and get a nice set of studio monitors from a reputable company such as Paradigm, B&W, Definitive Technology, etc. Calling a set of 2.1 speakers from Logitech "high end" is laughable to say the least. Logitech does make some solid products and their speakers work pretty well for gaming and non high fidelity tasks. But if you really want to use your PC for high end listening then you aren't going to be using Logitechs.

Everyone always cries "STUDIO MONITORS" yet usually don't have them themselves and even if they do a poor setup.

To use most monitors it would take a lot more complexity and cost than the Z-2300's and the end result in most listening rooms the same.

If you think that's bad, you should have seen my first submission to the "Post pics of your HT" - I was using these speakers:

With a 19" Tube TV, VCR, and one of those $20 DVD players. Yeah, I got made fun of, but I loved the setup at the time for my small room :p

Completely revamped the main review of this thread. Take a look as many new views, insights & technical aspects have been added while complete measures have been taken to trim the excessive fat. Still I admit, it is quite lengthy.

Views & remarks will be highly appreciated.

Regards, RishiGuru

This has to be the most in-depth review I've read for a speaker system. Great job, RishiGuru. (Y) I think you'll be pleased to know that your review made it to the front page: http://www.neowin.net/news/neowin-member-reviews-logitech-z-2300-mega-review

They are also asking me, if I am professionally interested to do this kind of reviews. I am yet to think about an answer.

I tried the Z2300s and was never blown away. Bought a set of Promedia 2.1's on ebay for $60 a few years ago and absolutely love them. I would like to be able to use optical out with them, but for using the simple stereo jack they are truly great. Mine have been very reliable and have seen a lot of high-volume usage. For the size and price, they are really fantastic.
