Logitech Wingman Strike Force 3d problem

I have the strike force 3d joystick. Dtects fine in Win2K. I am using the latest beta DirectX drivers 8.1. The software calls for at least DirectX8.0a. Fine, right? Nope. The software tells me I do not have the correct version of DirectX to proceed, that it requires at least 8.0a. Well, last I checked 8.1 was greater than 8.0.
Any ideas on how to make this work? Or any work arounds the software?
The stick is detected, but I cannot program buttons in a lot of games. Carmageddon TDR 3000 to be specific ;-)
Maybe this needs to be in software forum rather than a hardware one, if so, please excuse.
Cheers
Greg
