Logitech MX500 LED

I got the Logitech MX500 recently and had a question about its LED. It seems that the LED is always active. The reason for my question is that I haven't been going idle on AIM since I began using the MX500. It's not a terribly big deal, but I'd kind of like to know exactly what's going on and why. Is it because my desk is dirty or something? I've tried cleaning it off and making sure that there's nothing underneath the mouse that it thinks it would be seeing.

Note: this doesn't affect the actual use of the mouse. When I'm not moving it around myself, it doesn't move. The LED just doesn't go off. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

I just got the MX500 yesterday and mine does the same thing, clearly the MX500's LED doesnt turn off, unlike my old MS explorer.

So don't worry its normal.

My standard Logitech Optical does the same thing...I would guess it's to increase the responsiveness of the mouse, since it doesn't have to keep cycling the LED on and off. It also creates a neat glow while I'm going to sleep 😉

So does it prevent the screen saver from turning on?

No, even though it's on, it's not telling your pc it is moving.
So it's definitely the mouse that's causing AIM from going idle? Is there any way to prevent that from happening or make AIM go idle? Like I said in my original post, it's not a huge deal, but I'd like for people to know if I'm at the computer with an away message up or if I'm gone.

Supercommando, does it stop the screen saver from activating, or does AIM only have a problem with it?

I don't know about the screensaver. I don't use one. I just shut the monitor off.

Couple of other things.....

1. Is there any way to assign the three top buttons to open actual programs?
2. And does anyone else feel that the scroll wheel kind of stinks? It doesn't feel very fast, nowhere near as fast as the one on my MS Intellimouse Optical. Any ideas how to make that work better or faster?

the new mx optical engine is the cause for the led always being on...i read in one of the reviews that the mx scans @ 800 dpi and it doesnt stutter like other mice b/c it doesnt go idle....i havent had a problem going into screensaver/monitor off. too bad there's no tail light like in the MS mice...that would be neat...now if only i could get mouseware to work in games....

So do the new Mouseware software fix these issues, or is it not fixed yet?
It fixed the scrolling on mine. I had downloaded the new Mouseware software after buying the mouse, but never got around to installing it. I'm formatting tomorrow, but I figured I might as well go ahead and install the software now while I was thinking about it just to see if it works. And it does. 🙂

aim goes idle for me and i have this mouse.

From what I read the MX300 and 500 don`t power down with the sensor, the MX700 does because it uses batteries ,so the MX700 probably does it to increase battery life.

That makes sense. No need for the 300 or 500 to do it to conserve batteries obviously. I wonder if it's possible for a future Mouseware revision to allow users the option to power down the LED?

Actually, I've read that the reason for the LED dimming after inactivity on even corded optical mice, was to increase the life of the LED itself.

I doubt that, most LEDs are rated for something like 100,000 hrs of use. It's basically several years worth of full use. I've only seen one LED die from proper use in my whole life and it was on a 20 year old stereo.
