Logitech MX 500 mouse for gaming???

what i don't get is why they still have that little "ledge" where the ring finger/pinky rest... it's not as prominent as the last generation of mice.. but still there.

Well if your a gamer I heard logitech should be releasing a updated driver later this month that would be much more gamer friendly, I went ahead and got the MX 500 over the MX 700 as bad as wanted a cordless. After reading a couple of I dont need a heavy mouse for gaming.

hehe I wrote a review in a different thread of the 700 I just purchased, My MX 700 Review

I would assume the 500 is just as good, if not better, just for the fact that it should not have the weight that the wireless 700 does... When I first got my 700, the feeling was weird, but once I got used to it, I don't like using any other mouse hehe, still getting used to the weight though, game response is awsome. So with all the above, I would assume the 500 is just as good, and would put it at an even rating with the 700, since the 500 trades off the wireless option and loses some weight, while the 700 gets the wireless and gets some weight.

I've had an MX500 for a few weeks now and I like it for overall gaming. My mouse before this was a Razer Boomslang, but it was starting to die on me so I needed a new mouse. I've grown pretty comfortable with this mouse, but there is 1 thing I hate about it. The mousewheel is a total POS. It just feels wimpy, hard to use, and not very sensitive. There are many times when I would scroll the wheel and nothing registers. The mousewheel on my old Boomslang kicked major ass. I'm fortunate that I dont use the mousewheel all that much in games, it's passable for scrolling applications. But for gaming it's unacceptable. However, that may or may not be a big deal to you. It's an annoyance to me, but something that I can live with.

If you uninstall the mouseware stuff logitech supplies, the scroll wheel works perfectly fine. Must be a driver bug or somthing. Of course, then you loose the programmability of the mouse buttons...

Well, I haven't touched a Logitech mouse in a hella long time, but I don't remember you having to program 4th and 5th mouse buttons for games. I am pretty sure my old cordless logitech mouseman (pro? forgot, it came with cordless freedom pro keyboard) let me use my 4th mouse button as MOUSE4 in q3 and halflife w/o drivers. w/ drivers you lose it and you have to program it (programming did not work at all for me). Same with all MS mice. Don't install drivers and your set (I think back/forward functions still work w/o drivers, or maybe it defaults to pgup/pgdn, dont remember)

That mouse was reviewed in the latest edition of MaximumPC. They really, really liked it and said great things about using that mouse for gaming. BUT the review was done by MaximumPC ... their articles and reviews seem kind of off lately.

I got rid of this mouse even though it was the best feeling mouse i have EVER used, simply because you cannot bind the buttons in games.

VERY sad indeed.

I ended up with a crappy MS 3.0 which is not NEARLY as nice.

You can bind most of the buttons (the ones right above and below the scroll wheel are set up so that they emmulate a scroll wheel turn...so you can't change them) if you remove the mouseware software. Yea, I know its not the best solution..but its one that works now.

Just got the MX500 and so far I've been dissapointed. It seems to have problems with my 3M Precise Mousing Surface pad. It would just jerk around uncontrollably, work, then mess up again. Maybe its a defective unit, I'll get it exchanged later. But my Logitech Dual optical never had problems with this surface.

Been using mine for a while, it's an awsome mouse. Extremely precise and comfortable. I use a mouse pad from func.net and is extremely smooth.

I'm still using a trackerball mouse 🙂

Is there anyone that used both the ms intellimouse explorer 3.0 and the logitech mx500? Would you like to decide which one you prefer, specifically in gaming play? and why..?

Well, I got a replacement and its still the same. The 3M's surface seem to confuse the MX500. Its supposed to be slightly reflective in order to enhance the performance of optical mice but it completely throws off the Logitech. It would function just fine but when you lift the mouse just slightly, it starts to act up. Side to side movement seems to be fine but up and down is simply crazy. It would pause, then just jerk around suddenly. My Microsoft mice as well as the Logitech Dual optical have no problems at all with this mouse pad.

Dual optical still the best.

even though it's the only mouse ever made by Logitech that is totally uncomfortable.
I don't care what a USB mouse scans at.. the best most "useable" mouse they've put out in my opinion would be the iFeel mouseman optical or non Ifeel Mouseman optical.. side button would work as "shift" in Q3, that's it. only one button. and that got the job done. best feeling mouse in my hand, next to the MX-500 which didn't work in games up until less than a week ago with the new Mouseware.
i might have to get it again.

I have the MX 500. I miss my mouseman wheel, to tell you the truth. I liked the feel better and the position of the thumb button better. That said, I think the 500 is the best mouse on the market: buttons galore, which i appreciate, and a not-bad feel. Works just fine for games.

It's the best thing on the market for me, but if i could put its innards into the mouseman wheel i'd be happier.

I have the old Wingman Gaming Mouse - love the shape, too bad they don't make 'em like that anymore...perfect weight, perfect shape. I'm going to upgrade to the 700 soon, saw it at the store and it feels great.

The best shaped mouse I've seen recently is the new Microsoft Wireless one. It also has good weight due to the batteries (I hate really light mice). I don't get why they don't make a corded version with that shape although the weight would be gone.

Now's the time...$29.99 no rebates at Staples B&M. Was just there today looking for a router. Toss in something for $10 you wanted/needed anyways, like a new mousepad, and you essentially get that item for free ($10 off $40 at plump purse).

I tried the new drivers and the mouse still sucks for gaming. When is logitech gonna make a mouse driver that would allow you to bind ANY key on your keyboard to your mouse??? Sheesh this pisses me off so bad, how difficult can it be.

Tried a MX700...returned it the next day, went right back to my Boomslang 2k.

Different needs for different dweebs I guess...

I got the MX700 and used it for about two weeks. It worked great for gaming, provided I didnt load the Mouseman software, but the so called "Ergo" design gave me major cramps after I played games for more than 30 Minutes. I returned it and got the MX300, which is just a plain ol mouse + an awsome optical system. Best mouse Ive ever had.
