I just got this keyboard without doing any research beforehand. I picked it at Best Buy because of the way the keyboard felt. It was closest to the tactile feedback I like in a keyboard. I like keys that are half-height, like in a laptop keyboard. The edges of each key are rounded and there is a perfect amount of separation between each key. The clicky springiness, and the noise from typing is perfect.

I know it sounds weird but I am a software developer and generally a computer nerd so I spend the majority of my life in front of a keyboard. As a result I've come to have a very specific and developed taste in keyboards and mice. This keyboard delivers. The very small sense of satisfaction you get from pushing a button is as close to perfect as I've ever come across on a keyboard. While very small, aggregated over the dozens of hours spent using it each week it adds up to a noticeable and pleasing effect.

The ergonomics are nice. The texture of the keys, build quality, heft and feel of the keyboard all belie a sense of high quality. I use this on a glass desk, and the points at which the keyboard contacts the desk are a soft rubber like material that prevent it from slipping. Even the mini stands that prop up the keyboard, should you choose to use them, have the soft anti-slip material at the point of contact with the desk surface.

The keyboard is wireless and instead of using bluetooth it uses a proprietary Logitech wireless receiver. It's a tiny dongle that only sticks out from the USB port about half a centimeter. To be honest I was skeptical at first, due to previous experiences with wireless bluetooth keyboards -- all horrible and suffered from periods of lag and nonsensical key repetitions. I planned to use the keyboard with the bundled USB cable (primarily used for charging, i'm not actually sure if the keyboard will work over the USB cable, in non-wireless mode).

The keys are also illuminated, and there are four brightness settings for the backlight. There is a motion sensor that lights up the keyboard once your hands get near it. The lights fade in and out smoothly for a nice effect. On top of the that the keyboard is black with a clear plastic trim around it, it's one of the best looking keyboards I've used.

The keyboard also works in the BIOS, and because I have an older motherboard I wasn't sure this would be the case. The bluetooth keyboard I previously had didn't work in the BIOS.

I got a wireless logitech mouse as well, and the same wireless USB dongle works as a receiver for both devices simultaneously. Both devices came with their own dongle so now I have an extra that I don't need. There's also a USB extension cable bundled with both devices that is meant solely to position the dongle on your desk to provide better connection between devices and the dongle. I don't see why that cord can't be used a general purpose extension cable, but it comes with a sticker saying not to use it as that, and to only use it for the dongle.

Oh well, I'm pretty happy with both devices. I know this sounds like a schill post, but it is not, and this is the first impulse buy in a long time that I have been extremely happy with. I highly recommend this keyboard.

EDIT: Adding pics. (I just upgraded my workspace, and the keyboard and mouse were a part of the upgrade). I couldn't get a good shot of the illumination. Camera kept doing long exposure due to the dim lighting and I couldn't hold it steady, so the pics came out blurry and the brightness of the keyboard illumination ended up being exaggerated.

I've sold one or two of these. Keyboards are very much a personal taste kind of thing so it's very hard to recommend a "good" keyboard to a customer. Basically if they want something simple I just recommend the cheapest Logitech or Microsoft keyboard. That way at least they won't be disappointed with the price they paid and even the cheapest is usually fine for most people unless they type for a living and if they do that then they usually already have something in mind and won't be looking for advice from me.

Personally I don't like the 1/2 height laptop keyboard keys like that. For me I love mechanical keyboards (I'm using a Das Keyboard at home right now). But like I said it's a personal taste thing.

This is your Bluetooth host adapter simulating a USB keyboard / mouse and remembering the pairing info, even before the software driver initializes.

I still prefer my MS Natural Multimedia. Too bad they don't make it anymore.

how fast do you go through batteries with that set up?

Oh yeah, that's the other good thing about this. I've only had to recharge the mouse once so far (it's been about a week), and that's only because I constantly click and highlight text as I'm reading it. The batteries are rechargeable, and both can be used while charging via USB. I would not have considered purchasing them if they required standard replaceable batteries or overly complex recharging processes.

The keyboard and mouse both came with USB cables that can be used to recharge the units. Both units have on/off switches, and they automatically go into standby to conserve power when idle.

There is never any delay in bringing them out of standby; the very first keystroke registers by the keyboard for example, when I'm coming out of standby and start typing my windows password to come out of the lock screen. That responsiveness out of standby mode is another improvement over other wireless keyboards and mice I've tried in the past.

I've got one of their USB keyboards and mice (not illuminated) and it's awesome. It's not blue tooth so it was cheap but it still has plenty of range to get to the computer hooked to the TV. Also, after 6 months of daily use that I've had them I haven't had to change the batteries.

To each their own. Looks nice.

Personally I'm quite happy with my Saitek Cyborg v5

I've been thinking about picking up a new keyboard, my comfort curve is getting pretty dirty/worn. Is there a wired version of this? I don't really care about wireless, wires make no difference to me.

Or does anyone know of any basic, illuminated keyboards? Not looking for anything fancy, and I prefer the half height keys as well.

This is exactly what you're looking for:

http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Illum.../dp/B001F51G16

I have it. I like it. But you might want to wait until a deal pops up for it:

Slickdeals has this nice feature where you can track threads with specific keywords and get an email when someone posts a topic about it.

Looks great except for the palm rest. That would drive me nuts. Unless it's removeable? I can't find any info on that.

not a fan of the palm rest either, but this keyboard is AWESOME. best keyboard I've ever used. i easily go over 100 wpm on this. don't get it if you hate laptop keyboards however (shallower key travel, which I like).

Not sure about this, but I didn't care about wireless either. I mentioned in an earlier post that I bought this keyboard expecting to use it in wired mode due to bad experiences with wireless in the past. I was very impressed with how this worked in wireless, enough that I can't tell the difference between this one in wireless, and any other wired keyboard I ever used.

In my case the tactile feedback (and to a much lesser extent, the aesthetic appeal) was important enough for me to pay the near $100. I still actually don't care much for the wireless aspect, other than that it reduces wire clutter on my desk, and I don't have to deal with annoying wire slack on the mouse or keyboard when I move them to make space for pen & paper type work.

(Past issues w/ wireless included lag, weird behavior out of wake from sleep, excessive key repetitions, long periods of wacky behavior, non responsiveness, and quick battery train.)
