Logitech G5

I think I'm gonna get an MX518 instead of the G5. I use both thumn buttons frequently on my current MX500 from 2002.
Though the G5 looks interesting.

But isn't the laser potentially damaging if it shines in your eyes, or if you lift the mouse and it reflects off of some surface? What class is it set to?

the G5 is the gamers choice, the G7 is the got-money-to-throw-about non-gamers choice cuz its cordless....heh

seriously tho, if you dont game other than pootling about from time to time then go for a cheaper mouse or a cordless...but if u game hardcore stylee and you want every edge possible then go for the G5

as for the dude who asked where people getting them, dunno where in the USA, but www.overclockers.co.uk have been selling them since end of last month...heh

I do play games, but I'm not interested in a non-cordless mouse. 😉

In any case, my MX700 doesn't have any lag and will serve me fine until the day it dies anyway 😛

er, most light is potentially damaging if its powerful enough and shined directly in to your eyes...lol

any optical mouse could cause you problems, but the laser probably straight away rather than later in life, but its not exactly gonna melt your eyeball out just from a quick pass over....lol
also u gotta put it quite close, so no, it wont reflect off a surface and blind you either, that would be an illegal laser from a health and safety POV for non-professional consumer item....

I have to admit, I was very pumped when I read the logitech press release, and although i'm not a big fan of the color scheme I was relieved to see that they ditched that dented-scheme that makes the MX-518 look like it was hit with a ball peen hammer over and over.

I don't know about removing the second thumb button. Logitech said they had "in depth discussions with hardcore gamers". What gamers are they talking too? I personally use both thumb buttons in WoW, so I'm not sure I could adapt to the G5.

Anyway, I might check MS's new offering too:

Microsoft's Optical Intellimice were the best looking ones they ever made... they should've kept that scheme. Plus, it can be used by either hand... although that doesn't affect me, it's still good.

I had the opportunity to check out the MX-518 at Best Buy the other day, and was pretty impressed with the handling. If I could get over the looks, this one just might be a winner. Also, doesn't the G5 compensate in some way for the lack of a second thumb button? I'd heard that you could actually 'click' the mouse wheel left or right. Has anyone tried to do that?
 
well i just checked, the site i got my G5 from is still selling it, but the G7 is not being released till they got stocks, apparently the 25th september, so that i would imagine will be the official release date.....

the click left and right wheel is called a tilt wheel, its not exclusive to these mice, its on some other mice as well i think, basically you push your finger either side of the wheel and it clicks like a button, also u can push down to zoom, so altho u lose one of the left side buttons, u got 2 buttons from tilt....
however u lose the two page up/down scroll buttons from MX510, those on the MX518 and G5 become your on the fly sensitivity buttons....altho they are programmable, if u happy to stay with one sensitivity.....(in other words non-fps games mostly).

Well, yes, and it does compensate in a way, but I don't want even more tasks for my index finger. It's already occupied by the primary mouse button, mouse wheel and mouse wheel click.

It's much better to offload functions to the thumb.
 
Thanks for that feedback. Personally i'm still undecided. Both mice look to be like winners overall. I was curious about the clicking feature of the wheel though, and how it might compensate for the loss of one thumb button.

Just as a way of 'testing' that out, I tried a few mice here at home with scroll wheels. I know, its not the same thing, but it did feel somewhat awkward to try and 'click' left of right with the scroll wheel. Seemed a bit more intuitive, as emultra mentioned, to simply have the thumb take care of those duties. Perhaps someone with the mouse can fill me in - does logitech make this easier to do than I might imagine?

ok, i use my thumb for thumb button, next finger for LMB, 2nd finger for wheel, 3rd finger for RMB, 4th finger for side support.....

the wheel button sits higher than most other mice, presumably to allow it to tilt easily...
it has a fairly tight ratchet up down scrolling mechanism, i think this is so when u tilt it left or right you can do so by resting your finger on top, you dont need to put finger to the side of it......so for the way i use my mouse its lovely 🙂

it would be nice to have another thumb button too, but to be honest i tend to use my thumb for voice action so im happy not to confuse my thumb with other things....lol
definitely preferring the G5 over my 510 in pretty much every area now...

 
I think the loss of the extra thumb button will be more then made up for with the G15 keyboard's numerous G function keys. A match made in heaven (or more likely, logitech's marketing department) 🙂
 
Not unless I can use those keys with my right hand thumb, which I can't.

I mean, it's like if someone was to put three left and right finger buttons on the PS2 controller instead of two. Only, you're not allowed to use your middle finger; you have to tapdance your index finger across even more functions.

Why not split it up and be more effictient? And I don't see why they would have to remove a thumb button either. If it had both, then it would be a deal. But otherwise: MX518.

I just got my G5 today. Man is this thing sweet! The texture is really nice, kind of like plastic fur or something. All of the buttons are really solid, and adjusting the sensitivity on the fly is really useful. In BF2 for example, I switch it to max sensitivity for flying and min for sniping.

im glad someone else has it and likes it finally..lol

u had fun playing with the weights cartridge yet?...heh...

i use 3 large weights and 3 smaller ones atm, the large ones closest to the centre of the mouse....

 
I use no weights because I like my mouse as light as possible, but I'm sure it would be useful for someone who is used to a heavy mouse like a cordless one.
 
i dont like a light mouse, despite having hands capable of doing minute work (miniature painting etc) when it comes to moving a mouse i prefer a solid feel, but it has to glide, which the G5 does quite nicely, those feet are very good, and with the weight balanced nicely i get some resistence from the point of view of g-force....
