Logitech G5: Now With TWO SIDE BUTTONS!

Googer

Lifer
I just got my Logitech MX518 Mouse to a G5 today and I am plesently surprised to report to all of you that Logitech now makes it with TWO SIDE BUTTONS! This is the moment I have been waiting for!

EDIT: Bonus, the new G5 supports 1GHz polling rate vs 500Mhz for the "old G5". But I have found that even during desktop use a 1,000 report/sec rate uses 50-90% of my of Pentium 4's CPU cycles. So I have it set to 200 to match the rate of my PS/2 port and it does not affect video quality as much as higher speeds.

Kind of reminds me of the old 486 days when the ol' ball mouse would bog down the CPU when you moved it..

what, when, where, how!

I really prefer the G5 over the MX518 by alot, the laser just seems to pick up surfaces better than the optical MX518, plus I make my mouse pretty heavy which the G5 allows. 2 Buttons on the G5 would make the MX518 pointless.

WTF, I just ordered a MX518 a few days ago. I picked it over the G5 for the sole reason that I thought the G5 was missing the "forward" button. All of the reviews on Newegg said it was missing that button too.

Oh well, the MX518 is still much better than my 2001 MS Intellimouse Explorer that I replaced.

whyy don't you try and refund/exchange to newegg?

Right on, glad they finally got it together. Is the "middle" (scroll wheel) button still a pain in the ass to click? That was my biggest objection.

Would they charge a shipping/restocking fee?

I just picked it up at Best Buy and managed to haggle with the customer service dept and he he got a bargain of a Deal on it $49 instead of the usual $69.

EDIT:

I DON'T HAVE A DIGITAL CAMERA TO TAKE PICTURES BUT HERE ARE SOME LINKS

Two buttons, ugly color scheme...

Auction it on ebay, I just watched a used one sell for $30.

My biggest complaint is the two side buttons on the G5 are not as easy to click as the MX518. The new G5's buttons take more effort and do not have that very nice soft mouse click feel. It feels like I am pressing on dead mouse flesh and not a mechanical switch. I hate soft keys, that's why I type on a twenty-year old IBM keyboard.

Oh damn, where is that one review site which tested like a dozen mice and found that MX518 was the best, even better than the laser ones?

Ahhhh...I know what you're talking about but I lost the link when I formatted. 🙁 I'll try to search and find it again.

Good to know that the G5 now has two side buttons, but it's a bit late in the game! Perhaps Logitech will swap them out for current owners?

The Side Buttons on the MX518 are way better than the G5's. The NEW G5 buttons take a ton of force to depress and lack that nice tactical click and real disappointment if you ask me.

cheesy test, hold it upside down and rub your thumb over the sensor hole, you can control the cursor with the lasers, not with the regular ones it seems.

That has worked for me for as long as there has been optical mice, The light source never seemed to matter whether or not the pointer would move with my thumb over it or not.

cover the hole all the way with your thumb, i forgot to mention that. if you do it lightly or slightly above anything works. seal that hole and it won't work for non laser in my experience.

G5, G7, and MX Revolution are the MX100 on Steroids.

I liked my MX1000 well enough, but the high arch on the top bothered me. I ended up going back to my MX700 for gaming, and I now use the MX1000 for web browsing, and general computer work.

LOL, but really, who cares? That is something you'd never normally do to a mouse and I'm not even sure how it's that useful. I've owned optical and laser mice and have had no trouble using either of them on anything except maybe glass (and then they worked but not as well as a mouse pad or painted surface). I just don't see how the "thumb over the hole" test is useful or indicative of any real world scenarios. If someone purchased an optical mouse and discovered that it didn't track well on their surface (like wood), they'd probably just use a mouse pad...problem solved. 🙂

I agree, that is a very dumb way to judge mouse quality.
