Hi,

I need to get a decent keyboard and mouse combo; since I've been using 'afterthought' peripherals for ages which are wearing out.
I'm in the UK and can get the following combinations for the following prices:

Logitech diNovo Laser Desktop £115($207)
Logitech G15+G7 £98($176)
Logitech G15+G5 £86($155)

Basically I can't split them on price and price is not the issue here. I basically want the best set-up possible. I will be using them for general PC usage and gaming. Whilst I am keen on wireless peripherals simply to get rid of wires; I don't want them if I get even slightly less performance than the regular keyboard and intellimouse optical I'm currently using, and also if battery life is crap.

Here are a couple of concerns and opinions I have on the mice and keyboards so far. The problem is that in the UK there is essentially no where to test any of the mice or keyboards.

Logitech diNovo Laser Desktop:
1. Is the diNovo just like a laptop keyboard, in terms of key travel and sound?
2. Is the detachable media pad of the diNovo a help or a hindrance? Considering that I want a keyboard that performs in simple use flawlessly and not necessarily one that can do million functions in one.
3. Does the diNovo keyboard suffer from any lag, or 'wake up' times?
4. Is it good build quality? Will paint come off key etc?
5. Allegedly the supplied MX1000 wireless mouse in the diNovo set has some performance issues? A guy at Logitech did tell me that some people experiences lag and drop outs with this mouse. He said often this was due to strong power supplies creating interference with the receiver. But whatever he says is this mouse laggy? I've heard that it takes time to 'wake up' and re-sets itself when lifted above the surface. Are these allegations true and if so are these anomalous problems or systemic design faults.
6. Is the MX1000 ergonomically superior to the G5/G7?
7. Are the MX1000's extra buttons useful?
8. I understand the charger/docking station of the MX1000 uses an AC adapter, i.e. not the BUS. One good aspect of this I guess is that it can be charged whilst the PC is off; but on the other hand I hear that the batteries are not removable, so I assume that after a limited number of charges the whole mouse is useless. Bit of let down no?
9. Is the Bluetooth wireless tech better than the RF of the G7 mouse?

LogitechG15:
1. What materials is this keyboard made out of-it looks kind of ?plasticky? to me?
2. Some people have experienced paint coming off the keys, is this common and a sign of poor longevity/build quality?
3. Do the keys have a more conventional feel to them in terms of travel and noise? As a result is the diNovo more or less tactile and comfortable?
4. Is it generally not very clever to get a corded keyboard anymore?

Logitech G5/G7:
1. How do the ergonomics compare to the MX1000?
2. Does 2000dpi tech really show against the MX1000's 800dpi laser?
3. Which finish is better/more comfortable, the G5's or G7's?
4. Would both track easily on an unpolished relatively uneven dark wood veneer surface?
5. Does the G7 suffer from any lag, wake up time, unresponsiveness or interference like the MX1000 allegedly does? The same guy at Logitech informed me that the G7 has a much stronger signal and connection and thus does not suffer form the same problems that the MX1000 allegedly does.
6. Whilst there are I guess pros and cons to the removable batteries of the G7; does the constant changing of batteries get irritating?
7. Unlike the MX1000 the G7 is entirely BUS powered-but I guess this means that the batteries are only charging in the cradle if the PC is on?
8. How much is the battery life of the G7 affected buy usage? Like for instance I tend to leave the computer on for a long time unattended, will batteries be dying even when not in use? And in normal use, i.e. not gaming is the battery life still the appalling 8Hours?
9. Bottom line with a difference of only £12 which is better? Is the performance identical regardless of the wireless? Logic dictates that I guess for only £12 your getting a better deal with the wireless G7; but crucially is it a better product?

You probably find me stupidly anal by now, but essentially my problem is that no matter which option I choose, there all expensive. Therefore I have to make the right choice. What I want is a mouse and keyboard that performs its simple and prescribed tasks flawlessly and preferably in a superior manner to my old set up (definitely so on the mouse). In my humble opinion all of these devices are riddled with gimmicks of one form or another, but that's OK if they do all the basics brilliantly first.

Aesthetically I prefer the diNovo desktop by miles but if the MX1000 is no good then I'm not interested. As far as the G15 goes I like the backlight feature but other than that it seems pretty regular to me. It does seem it bit odd to me to 'upgrade' and not go wireless? But if this is the best solution then so be it. As far as the G5/G7 goes this is really tricky for me. I do like the idea of wireless, I really do, but is it worth the apparent hassle? And crucially is the G7 significantly better than the MX1000? The G5 seems to me to be the least 'inspired' choice of the 3 mice, but again if the wireless capability of the G7 means sacrifices in performance etc then I guess this is my best bet. All in all I want the best quality, performance, ergonomics, comfort and reliability possible.

A critical underlying debate in my head is whether wireless is worth it? I'm no gaming addict but I do appreciate responsiveness and performance and with the premium price expect it! So I'm just worried that I'll be let down and left with an ornate heavily marketed product-and consequently go back to some old optical crap! But the prospect of being blown away with a fantastic wireless mouse or keyboard is equally exciting.

Obviously this is a rather long post on a topic that I'm sure many of you will find trivial. Nonetheless I would appreciate advice particularly from users of respective products. If you can't be bothered to answer the individual questions pertaining to each option (I don't blame you) then just make the best suggestion from the following combo's with reasons:

Logitech diNovo Laser Desktop £115($207)

Logitech G15+G7 £98($176)

Logitech G15+G5 £86($155)

Thanks!

OK, I am not going to even attempt to answer all those questions. But from my personal experience, I prefer wired keyboards and mice. I have the G15 and G5, and absolutely LOVE both of them. The battery life on the DiNovo is unknown to me, but if it is like most Bluetooth keyboards then battery life on two AA's should last a good deal of time.

As for the difference between G5 and G7 I would say that it is really a preference thing, because really the G5's wire isn't that bad, it is nice and long and since it is covered in woven cloth it doesn't stick to things like a plastic cord. The G7 uses the two removeable batteries so really that isn't an issue either, unless it bothers you to have to trade them out in the middle of something, which could be a problem if you play extremely time sensitive games.
