Logging network traffic

I have an ASA 5505 laying around, and was thinking I could use it to log overall traffic throughout the months, and keeping info up to a year or two. Is that possible with an ASA? I can only get it to show up to the last 5 days and only in Kbits per second.

Or should I go with something like smoothwall/pfsense?

Bonus if it will show what device on the inside is using xxx amount of bandwidth too.

If all you want to do is log overall network traffic, I'd suggest using a program that can poll SNMP on your router and log/plot the results.

Can you define "overall traffic"?
If you're looking to log raw traffic, you need to send it to a repository, such as Netscout's InfiniStream, or Riverbed's Cascade, via a SPAN port.

If you're looking for top talker like stats, you need NetFlow, or its equivalence.

I don't think ASA's do SPAN, or NetFlow, so you may be SOL here.

I am also talking home use ... I just have an ASA 5505 laying around I thought I could utilize a bit, since I only have a DIR 655 as my firewall/dhcp/wireless.

I heard bandwidthd is pretty awesome, I had a friend show it to me, logs traffic for IP which would be perfect, as well as overall traffic...hooked into pfsense.

I was just hoping my asa 5505 could do something like this.

where does cacti tap in? I just want to make sure I am not having 1-3 appliances. If I am, I might as well just keep my DIR 655 and deal with no graphs.

could I run a VM on my HTPC that collects the netflow traffic of the ASA into something like cacti or bandwidthd?

yup, I am half tempted to just get a new router and throw tomato on it now ... all I really want it purtty bandwidth graphs and history of how much data I pull.

Maybe i'll just sell the ASA 5505 then...

anyone know anything abou tomato?

My three requirements :

-Can run tomato, obviously!
-Dual band - 5ghz and 2.4ghz
-10/100/1000 on WAN and LAN

-Quick question on Tamoto : How far back does it log the overall bandwidth? I'd love to start keeping track of how much data I push/pull.

-Also, does it ever log each users/IP traffic/bandwidth? Not required, just interesting to know if it does.
