I noticed with Mandrake 9.1 you are no longer to log into X as root, what gives?

I know that there are numerous security considerations when running X with root privilages but for my crashbox I would like to be able to play with it without having to use su/sudo or authenticate with the GUI every time I want to do something that requires root privilages.

Found this...let me know if it works...linux is between 5 distros at home...non installed Today!

yeah when logged in as your other user in KDE click the start apps
button move up to configeration -> KDE -> system -> login manager click
on this you will need your root password to enter this program. Click on
the tab Users then in hidden users uncheck the box next to root apply
the sttings log out and it should be avalible!

I set mine to not start GUI @ startup. I was able to login as whoever I wanted and then startx. Not pretty, but it worked.

I personally use gdm as the login manager. There's an option to allow root login in the configurator (it was enabled by default for me).

Nothing really, If you are comfortable using the CLI for everything. I personally still need a little visual help (ALA GUI) to find what it is I am looking for.

Nothing. Logging in and starting X should be done from the CLI.
It actually takes more time using gdm or kdm than it does to use the CLI.
