Lodging in NYC for ~ 4 weeks

I've got a friend who's going to NYC (Empire State Building area) in Aug-Sept for an elective and was wondering where would be a good place to look for subletting/renting a place for that long? I know it will be expensive but just need to start looking somewhere... any tips/suggestions?

Aug-Sept? Why would you need a shelter. There's usually a nice breeze in NYC on summer days.
