Howdy.

Just upgraded the old wood burner, and I'm having some troubles. Win 98 SE is occasionally freezing or restarting itself. I sometimes get a VXD error message before freezing and requiring a reboot. Sometimes on thr reboot I get another error message on a DOS background that ends "You will have to rstart your computer." It sometimes takes 2 or 3 reboots before Windows starts normally. I have formatted thr HDD and reloaded 3 times, with similar results. I cannot pin down the frequency of the problem - sometimes the PC will run without any problems and sometimes it crashes within a couple of minutes.

A sympton (perhaps) of the troubles is that I have lockups with some of the games I have. All games installed with no problems, however Falcon 4.0 and Freespace 2 get through the intro screens and config process, but freeze immediately when the missions start. I tried 800x600 as well as 1024x768 resolutions with the same result. I am also running Delta Force 2 with absolutely no problems at all.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

System:
CPU AMD Athlon XP 1500+, M/B Soltek SL-75DRV (Via KT266), 256MB PC266 DDR, Gigabyte GA2560 32MB GeForce graphics, IBM 20GB 7200 RPM HDD, Win98 SE, DirectX 8.0a.

you may have to turn off ACPI in the BIOS and in the win98 Device manager under PCIBUS.

First off, make sure your power supply is adequate. Next, make sure you have the most recent bios

Soltek bios upgrade

<edit>I checked their site, it's a known problem with AthlonXP processors unless you have the most recent bios.
