I still don't get why you didn't go back to the gym and get your keys. Even once I heard the initial $85, I'd have went back to the gym and returned unless it was several hours away which doesn't make sense given its your gym. And hell, had I decided to not go back and accept the $85 to come over, as soon as the asshole checked it out and uttered "plus $420 to..." I'd say "sorry to waste your time, here's the $85 for coming" and went to the gym no matter what.

It would have taken me around four hours round trip to go back and get my keys. My keys are in my gym bag at my office, which is an hour away when the trains are running normal time, but at night the line near me slows to a crawl at this time of night (i got home at 10:45pm). I have to transfer two times, which also adds more wait.

Why not take a taxi? Probably would have been cheaper than getting ripped off by the locksmith.

this thread is now about coming up with new ways to rub it in OP's face
😛

So this company seems shady. I paid part of the money with my CC (only $70 of it). The charge shows as being from "Elm Locksmith". Their phone number doesn't erturn anything on google except some retarded ad in Chinese or Japanese (718-710-1422, and 718-419-1398). No company name on the letterhead just "Locksmith Service", no address.

I found some results on google saying this is a common scam, charging 400-600 after quoting some much lower price on the phone. They say to file a complaint with the BBB, but what will that do? And since I don't even have the company's real name or address my complaint will be meaningless.

And thanks to everyone who's rubbing it in my face!

lulz

I thought the OP was kind of dumb for paying that much for a locksmith and using a CC, but cash, HAHA.... that SUCKS.

Would probably be cheaper if you had just kicked your damn door down or used a sledgehammer, then replaced it. :-/

lol next time break the window.
climb in, replace window for much less.
hell, for less than 100 dollars you can get a very nice drill and a buncha bits and drill through yourself assuming its not an apartment. run an extension cord to the yard outlet😛

Left my keys in my gym bag at work, I didn't realize till I was already home. I live an hour away.

$85 - to come to my place
$420 - to drill the two locks which they supposedly could not pick
$170 - for the replacement locks

total: $670

This is in NYC. What the eff man, these guys are so shady. When you call on the phone they tell you it's 85. I called the place again to make sure the dude they sent wasn't giving me fakek prices so he could pocket the money, and the guy on the phone told me 85 again, then I had to ask him 10 different questions in order to get him to tell me all the things they charge you for, and he got pissed and was like "that's the price, you want the service or no?". I hung up on him because he didn't realize i already had his henchman over at my place fixing the lock. So fucking pissed right now. I don't know anyone in brooklyn (where i live) who i could give my spare to.

next time, go to the store, buy a drill and a new lock.

do it yourself.

problem solved.

LOL..i did that once. Locked the door and forgot all keys (including car keys) inside the apartment. Parents were ~4-5 hours away.

Ended up going to the back side of the apartment and broke the smallest window through which I could fit into. Replacement of the window only cost like ~40 or so (it was a small ~2'x~2' window)

when i was still in HS, my brother and i found ourselves locked out.

luckily, i left my bathroom window open (2nd floor, it's about 8 inches tall, and 16-18 inches wide)

luckily, we had a 12 foot ladder sitting around outside the house.

i'm not small enough to fit through that hole, but luckily (x3!) my brother was. 😀

+5000
WTF is wrong with you. You turned your simple misplaced key issue (not even lost) that would have taken you 2-4 hours at most of inconvenience (or could have slept at a friend's place / motel for the night), and turned yourself into an easy scam donk, losing 2 hours of inconvenience anyways but with loss of money too. Paying cash, ROFL.

May I ask if you carry around that much money on you, or did you also go to the ATM?
