Did you fail 2nd grade? It's both. But in your case it's possession, but when used as "what's" or "it's" it's short for "what is" and "it is".
 
the former. the second one doesn't actually work grammatically, seeing how it needs a definitive article.

at least, thats how its commonly taken.

No. I am in college.

I asked the question because my friend who refuses to be wrong used it as the latter, not the former, and I just wanted some further proof for my cause.
