Does anyone know why my thread would have been locked?
Link to the locked thread

That thread was locked because we are not going to take a poll on how the forums are going to be run. If you have input, that is a different matter.

Possibly because it was getting ready to turn into a flame fest.

that's one reason. another reason is that i think one of the AT's rules is that the rules are unspoken.

Ya I can see that being a possiblity. I really wish it wouldn't have happend that way. It's a question that I would really like to get the communities opinion on. If I repost the question where should I do it and not get the thread derailed into a flamewar, should I even repost the question? Thanks guys you replies have been great.

That's kind of an oxymoron isn't it? Furthermore that type of rule doesn't really help new posters and lets face it if AT wants more hits they need more posters. Just my $.02 and a major reason why I put a poll on my original post; I wanted to see what the community thought of the idea.

You posted in the right area, it got locked so don't start a new one. Usingcommon sense on what and what not to post will help.

Possibly try again with a disclaimer that the previous thread became a flame fest.

Sometimes the Mods will slap a wrong doer a second time.

Also, try to word the thread such that it does not seem to be a troll or flame fest igniter from the outset.

I linked the thread in question in the op also here is what the post was:
I was wondering if it would be possible to have a header at each forum that would display the rules for each catagory. Other forums do this and it is very helpful in keeping the forum nice and clean. I will add a poll to see what other community members think about this. Thank you.
Let me know what you think. Does it sound like a flame fest igniter or a troll? I would like the next thread(if there is one) to get some good feedback from the community. Thank you again, you all have been helpfull.

Well, I didn't mean to be harsh OP. I was having a hard time stomaching some comments from other video forum members and I know josh is your buddy.

Anyway, I'd still say the rule is "use common courtesy".

I think he's more concerned with new posters learning what the rules are from a list rather than learning the hardway through flames. Even though I hate flamewars, I can't say I haven't learned anything from them. If there were a set list concerning the rules, maybe people would think twice before making such flamable statements.

I can see that, however a new member would have trouble knowing what the rules are several of them aren't exactly visceral. For instance I didn't know that the mods aren't going to take polls on what the community would like or not like. I thougt that I had seen a poll about how the tabs should work while in AT forums, and given that that thread seamed well received I continued on with my goal of making the thread a poll. My point is that there is no way a new member can check to see if their actions are ok on this forum short of getting a message from a mod or a mod having to lock the post. I think overall having a header with rules for the whole forum in general if not in every catagory would be a good way to take some of the work load off of the mods. If they didn't have to follow around and clean up after new members or even members who haven't learned these unwritten rules yet then they could make their time more usefull.

LOL, think of the mods, why won't anyone think of the mods?!?

:p

Anyway, redbox, the answer is still-use common sense. If you wouldn't say something in real life to someone else for fear of getting your teeth jarred loose, don't say it here.

I'd rather not have a bunch of stickied "rules" like dfi.street. As much as I hate seeing fanbois running about trying to troll up some trouble, no rule is going to prevent that from happening.

This board has what, 146,000 members or something? There will be problems. This isn't a court of law where the mods need to refer to a stickied "rules" thread to justify vacations, bans, slaps etc. Thye take care of things eventually, leave them be

ya I guess there are a few different schools of thought. I my self realy like dfi-street the rules helped me so that I never had any trouble posting wrong or whatever. You common sense thing works for the most part. However, I don't think it would have worked in my case with why my last thread was locked. The mod said:

You are right that with a forum this big there will be problems, but it just kind of follows that once a popultaion gets big enough rules help keep them in check. Thanks for your input though. It always helps to have two different view of a subject if not more.

Isn't taking a poll a form of input? Isn't a petition a compressed example of how members feel? I don't think redbox is trying to change the way the forums are ran, just display a helpful list of what not to do. If giving members a set of rules to follow changes the way a forum is ran, how is that change carrying a negative impact? How does displaying what not to do negatively effect a forum?

skooma, I can see your reasoning and I also feel that it would indeed be a long stretch for rules to actually prevent things from happening. However, I don't see how it would hurt anything at the same time. The Constituition has rules that are broken often, but that doesn't mean that we should just get rid of them simply because they don't work. The Mods are the judges here, members are police as well as criminals, one more thing to help would be some "laws". I'm not saying that it should absolutely be something that NEEDS to be done. I'm just saying that I don't see why not.

Posting wrong.... You mean aggravating Angry Games (or I think he calls himself Happy Games now) or the rest of the privledged kool aid drinkers there? :p

I don't know what you had thought of posting that would have got you in trouble but I'd say its similar to what would get you in trouble in real life, no?

Anyway, you're assuming people need help understanding how to post in a civilized manner. I think they don't. The ones that do will be weeded out soon enough.
