locked out of imac

I was given an imac awhile back and it has 9.1 on it. But the idiot who gave it to me didnt tell me any of his accounts were locked and needed passwords. I dont have a re-install disk (well I do but for some reason it spits it out after a few sec, maybe because its on a dvd-r?) So is there any other ways to get around the stupid log in?

I cant ask the guy because its been awhile and I have no idea where to get in touch with him.
 
9.1? Oh wow, that may require a time machine.:Q

I'm just going to get the immediate stuff out of the way: Is it fast enough that it can run Mac OS X? 9.1 was pure torture, by all means wipe the drive and use X if you can.

With that said, if you're hellbent on staying with 9.1, it doesn't have real login security. I think just holding down the Shift key while booting will get you past it.
 
You can also try looking on Apple's website for info in their knowledge base. Take a look at MacNN as well, they would have other suggestions for you.
 
boot from another drive
You need to get at the file:
Hard Drive (Name)>System Folder>Preferences>Multi-User Prefs
and trash it. It doesn't matter exactly how but that's the gist of it.
 
holding shift while I reboot needs the password as well. is there a disk burning utility that I can use on windows to burn a new OS disk?
 
ISOs of Mac OS X burn just fine with regular software; I'm not sure about MacOS Classic however.
 
IF the iMac doesn't like your DVD, you can connect an external DVD-drive and boot from it. If you know someone else with a Mac, you can connect them with "Target Disk Mode" to install your OS.
 
no luck, every OS I find has to be burn with disk utilities from..a mac. something about the way it makes the sectors or some shit. So I need to find a 8gig flash drive or someone with a mac to burn me a OS I guess.
