Locked keys in car

How much do you guys figure it would cost to break a third of the rear window (one of those opening kinds on trucks)? Less than $70?

edit: should rephrase that.. how much to repair the damage done by breaking the window 😛

uhh

AAA..... like 40$ they slide it open
unless you've got another key somewhere else and arent stuck somewhere

Doesn't seem true in my area.. they seem to only serve members and even then they just reimburse you for the cost of a locksmith, $50 maximum.

Interesting..

When it happened to me long ago in Canada, we called CAA they charged 50$ to do it (non-member)

When we were a member it was free

full glass coverage would've come in handy... I gotta keep this situation in mind. 😉

EDIT>> oh forgot they could open by phone. 😱

Yo those small windows can be expensive to replace.

Often small windows cost more than the big ones.

Call a locksmith. Also, I've called AAA for a lock out and didn't pay a dime. AAA is a great service.

AAA doesn't provide auto lock-out services for non-members, per their call center rep, but he did put me through to the lowest rate in town @$50.

Live and learn.. to get a spare key 😛

I think I paid $40 for my yearly membership in AAA. One lockout or tow and it pays for itself.

Your police department may provide motor vehicle lockout services, pending call volume. Worth a shot!

You don't replace the sliding part, you replace the whole damn thing. As a matter of fact, it's cheaper to smash a door window, as opposed to the little opera window.

< Did it on my Ranger and made a replacement from thick acrylic and softened it over a Halogen light, then flexed it into place. and when it cooled, it was tight.

I shouldve have tried this first, but I just paid what must equate to $50/second for this guy to do the job 😛 I live in Seattle so I'm 99% sure they have better things to do

Next time:

Pry open the rear upper corner of the door.
Slip in a coat hanger (or appropriate device).
Push the power door lock button.
Spend the $200 on blow/hooker.

From what I could tell it seemed like the guy used the standard slim jim method, although he had two rods in his hand I think the other was just for guiding the slim jim.

this won't work on newer cars. last time i was locked out, i/locksmith tried this, and my car didn't respond to the unlock button being pressed, presumably since the alarm was active.

also, i think that the corner of my door is a little loose/bent now..i always hear wind noises when it is really windy out...

Doesn't it seem rather ass-backwards when we live in a time where someone would legitimately question the cost-efficiency of contacting a mechanical professional over just breaking and replacing the window? P.S. Last time I had to replace a rear quarter panel a USED replacement was $160 from a JUNK YARD.

Ding ding. Same with my truck, one of the things GM really did right.

Yup, the small windows are harder to source, especially if they have fat shapes.

Yep. And now would be a good time to sign up for AAA so you're covered next time.

It works on some cars..not on others. I highly doubt your door is bent. Check the weather stripping.

If they're not in the ignition, how does it know? 😛

I will not bitch about having to key-lock the driver's door on our Civic again.
