Lock-up while downloading or surfing the net

My system usually locks up while I am downloading files or surfing the net. The cursor cannot move and ctrl+alt+delete has no effect, so I have to hit the reset button. The cpu at that point is between 45-50C but I don't think it's the heat. My vendor changed all the parts except for the cpu because I unlocked the multiplier, but that did not help.
My system is: Athlon Thunderbird 1 G @ 995Mhz (multiplier @ 7.5)
Asus K7V133 @ 133FSB
Asus V6800 graphics card
Creative 128 sound card
WD 300AB hard drive
Conexant internal modem V.90
Network card.

It also freezes when downloading files from other computers in a LAN setup. Strangely, it does not freeze while playing games over the net, or over a LAN. It can happily go for hours, but when it comes to downloading files, it just freezes. I installed VIA 4 in 1 drivers 4.24. Installed IE 5.5, and used the repair IE function. That work for a little while, but it's back to the problem.
This happened before I unlocked the cpu's multiplier. There has to be a conflict. Could it be the hard drive while it is writting?

Totally freeze ups are normally due to IRQ conflicts. Are you familar with all the sound blaster/Via south bridge issues? You may be seeing the common problem related to that. Do a search of the forums for via/sound blaster and you will see. As I recall, one of the problems is with the SB Legacy device. Some people fixed it by ENABLING LPT INTERUPT SHARING for the legacy device properties in device mgr. There's several fixes.

Nice Rig! Are you on Team AnandTech? :)

You might want to check asus's website for bios update.
I notice that there were two available for the K7V model (I think that is the same as the K7V133 but check first!!)
Asus Support Link

I hope this helps!

I thought those Southbridge issues were related to the Soundblaster "Live" cards only and did not pertain to the "128" cards?

I'm not positive about that HotWire. I believe the cards are VERY similar hardware wise. (Anyone know different?). I think the software package actually makes the card a "live"....prove me wrong. :D LOL

At any rate, the 128 will still install the legacy support.

Thanks for the suggestions. I bought an external modem. Physically uininstalled the internal one, it seems to be working ok, except it seems to not be able to open web sites all the time.
Re: Creative 128 and Sound Blaster: On Creative's website the 128 is called Sound Blaster Vibra 128, so it could be the same card, I dunno for sure. When I boot up, I get a message : Creative Blaster. I'm not sure if that answers your question.
