Lock up when plugging in speakers???

I have the weirdest problem that occurs when I merely plug speakers/headphones into my sound card. When I do this, 50% of the time the computer will lock up. It happens only with sound cards in this one computer. It happens on both an SB Live and SB Audigy2 that I have tried in this computer.

When these same sound cards are put in another computer, they are fine.

This all makes it seem pretty clear that the problem has something to do with this computer, and not with the sound cards... makes sense enough?

So what could it be? This makes me worry that somehow electricity is where it shouldnt be on this computer.. like something isn't grounded correctly and electricity is going through the case or something to that extent. Maybe that has nothing to do with it. This one's got me baffled. Any ideas?

for starters, what is "this computer?" the one in your sig? how old is it? did you build it yourself?

A) it is the one in my sig, and yeah.... i built it myself lol

B) yes i have tried different PCI slots, all do the same thing

Uhhh this may be too obvious but are the correct drivers installed? I was running with no Creative Labs drivers for my Live! Value (only the Windows ones) and I would get blue screens 'o death when plugging in a joystick to the gameport. Installing Creative Labs drivers fixed the problem. The OS in this story by the way is Win XP home.

hmm yeah.. all correct drivers were installed. Each time i would put one of the sound cards in i'd go straight to creativelabs.com and head to the driver section for the right drivers.

but regardless, with or without the right drivers, should it really lock up when i put the speaker/headphone jack in the correpsonding port on the soundcard? lol

Simply plugging in headphones/speakers shouldn't lock up your system. I suspect that you're moving your soundcard when you're plugging in the speakers. Do you have the PCI card screwed down?

yes i've formatted and the problem hasnt gone away.. and i know the PCI card is in firmly. it's not wiggling around if that's what u mean. All i can think of is if i accidently make contact with the metal plate surrounding the jacks, that it somehow shorts out.... but why would it do that with 2 sound cards.....................
