🙁😕:frown: 1st I'm not a gamer or very knowledgeable ,not looking for sarcasm or snobbery, JUST HELP ! I have an older packaged HP 700mhz ,Trigem mobo, intel810e chipset, 384mb ram . I added a PNY GeForce fx 5500 128mb PCI card ( no agp slot ) since then it started locking up for a few seconds then the screen jumps and unlocks . Doesn't matter what I'm doing then it freezes and I have to shutdown and restart. I got a blue screen that said "nv4_disp" once. I have disabled the integrated graph adapt , upgraded latest nvidia drivers , run spyware and virus progs, checked temps both card and heat sync are slightly warm . This is annoying and am frustrated because I don't know much about software or hardware. Please help

Hi,
what os are you using? ie win95/98/ME/XP?

Try
START
RUN
type MSCONFIG
goto STARTUP tab.

Untick as many boxes as you can in here, apart from the obviously important ones - this is where most of the progs that start up when you boot are found.
Careful, though these can always be changed back, remember to make a note of what you have done.
Restart sys.
See if that helps.

If it does, then enable [tick] one prog at a time in this box.
This will find the prob if it is a software prob - might be, might not be.

Please try this, then let us know.
Thank you

sry XP PRO , yes on the vga drivers , and while i'm on IE the screen jumps and reloads if I didn't mention that. I really don't know what 3/4 ths of the programs are so I don't know which ones to disable. The thing is this never happened b4 the new card. Any more info I can give to help?

Im having the same problem with my friends new comp. I think i've narrowed it down to his non-sp1 XP pro. We're going to go out and get the new XP pro for him. Every thing in his box is new except his windows version.

Sempron 3100+
ASUS k8N (newest bios)
512mb PQI power
windows XP pro (non sp1)
ASUS Ti4200 128mb 8xagp 66.93 (tried all sorts of revisions on drivers)

oooook....check this out for size...this may/maynot help

in a previous post....montag451...said to do something called, or similar to, a "clean boot". thats when u pretty much have the basics of basic schtuff runnin when u start up and are on ur desktop (e.g. at this moment, i've got 43 running processes (lil apps/progs runnin in the background or current open windows/apps n such) running now, but when i "clean" booted, that # shot down to aobut 21-23 processes running with that particular bootup...). look below for how to do a "clean boot":
NOTE: THIS IS FROM AN EMAIL I GOT FROM VIVENDI GAMES!!! i'm just giving cred where its due.[/b]

Clean booting Windows XP

NOTE: You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group in to complete this procedure. If your computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may also prevent you from completing this procedure.

1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type msconfig, and then click OK.

The System Configuration Utility starts.
3. Click the General tab, and then click Selective Startup.
4. Under Selective Startup, click to clear the following check boxes:
- Process System.ini file
- Process Win.ini file
- Load Startup Items
5. Click the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All.
6. Click OK, and then click Restart.

follow that and post a reply to say yay or nay on it workin to fix ur prob.

heres a couple more thingys that may be the cause of ur prob (along w/ note not wrong things, too):
1. wrong--ur pci slot may be muffed up (this may be the case cuz my agp pro (can switch btween 8x (superfast)/4x (somewhat fast, tho maybe not desireable for gamers)) slot in my mobo (techie lingo for motherboard) doesnt set my agp to NE THING!!, it just keeps the agp settin to "off"...go fig)
2. wrong--ur mobo's prolly pretty old and beat...think bout shellin out the 40-50 bucks for a new mobo if all else fails (newegg.com or zipzoomfly.com have very good service and very good pricing/deals on things of the like)
3. not wrong--ur pci FX5500 is a good card (albeit a more expensive pci version, meaning more expensive than the agp (advanced graphics port) by a small bit), just maybe an f---ed up mobo
4. wrong (maybe)--ur power supply may not be powerfull enuf to adequately power the gpu (graphic processing unit) of the card...make sure its a 350watt or higher power supply (give the comp the electrical juice it needs to start up)
5.make sure u have the newest FORCEWARE 60-series drivers from http://download.nvidia.com/Win...93_win2kxp_english.exe (note: as of this post, these are the newest FORCEWARE drivers from nvidia)

6. this is just a wondering thing on my part...nothing really to do with right/wrong comp things...why do u have and older-sounding mobo, an almost-unheard of-processor speed nowadays, and an FX-series graphics card? its probably not my place to say that, but i wanted to just ask, for curiousity's sake...i'm sorry if i've made an offensive comment, but i just was wondering...thats all.

lastly, if nothing else works, email the manufacturer of ur mobo and/or PNY for ur graphics card and see whats up with the wierdness ur experiencing....

hope this long a** post helps u and maybe others...

peace..
