Bear with me, I'm a novice. My computer locks up an awful lot (esp. in 3d games but not exclusively). It boots up just fine, but it seemingly chooses random times to freeze. I've tried setting the memory at 100Mhz instead of 133, hooking up the Deskstar to the ATA 66 instead of the Promise controller, and I got the detonator 6.31 drivers for the video card. No dice. Any input would really be appreciated.

AMD Tbird 900
128mb Mushkin cas2 PC133
Asus A7V
Asus GeForce2 MX
IBM Deskstar 45G
Addtronics full tower
Win2k Pro
Microsoft USB keyboard & mouse

Do a little hard drive clean up too.. Click Start... Find.. Files and folders.... In the named box put in [ .temp,~*.* ] With out the brackets.. Make sure the look in box is on your C drive.. Delete all that you can a few might be in use so you will not be able to delete those.. You can save them in your recycle bin for a few days if you want but I have never had a problem..

I have a similar system the only differences are 800MHz Tbird and 30 GB disk. Also W2K OS.
I had similar problems with random freezes I've tried everything, reinstalling from the beginning everything, all new drivers from VIA 4in 1 4.25a, 6.31 for the ASUS 7100 MX, theAGP patch from Micrsoft installed etc.
I never experienced problems with games (well, I only have compat flight simulator)or watching DVDs though. What I found is that the system is stable only if set to normal i.e. AGP 2x and not optimum (AGP 4x) in BIOS.
So my question is whether the drivers support AGP 4x or is something wrong with the hardware.

any suggestions please?

thanks

Just a simple question here that might have been overlooked. What about your IRQs? Is your videocard sharing with another card in your computer? Are any cards sharing? Certain cards do not like to share with others, while some will share just fine.

there do not seem to be any conflicts although IRQ 9 is shared by the MS ACPI, promise ATA 100 controller,
NVIDIA GEforce MX, SB live sound card, and USB controller. The system does not report any conflicts. I have tried however to have the hard disk connected to the ATA 66, therefore no ATA 100 drivers, and without the sound card so that to minimise IRQ sharing but the problem was still there. there is an article in amdzone .com about how to set up the A7V (in AGP 4X mode) so that it runs stable and I've done everything the same except for the BIOS version. They suggest 1003 but I have 1004d. Also Is there anyway to see how the W2K is set up with respect to AGP? Is there a way to set it up apart from BIOS?

thanks

Whoa. I'd try to spread out those items onto different IRQ's. A normal rule I have is never to have more than 2 things on one IRQ

The Via Agp driver in the Via 4 in 1 drivers supports 4x AGP mode if you select turbo Install, mine runs fun at 4xAGP(MSI K7T PRO & Geforce2 MX).

when installing the VIA drivers 4.25a in W2K I was never given the choice on whether to install in turbo mode or not. just install or unistall the AGP driver.
Concerning the IRQs although I also find that too many things share the same one I do not think that the problem is there because I have tried a clean install of w2k and just the ASUS Gforce MX card installed and the system kept freezing even doing simple things like pressing the start button and with no other applications running!! all these with AGP 4x (optimal mode) in BIOS. in normal mode all is well.
