MaximumPC picked the TDK over the Plex (Dec '00 issue), even though they both got EXCELLENT reviews, and are the same drive. The deciding factor (again from the Feb'01 issues, page 11-12) between the 2 was the fact that the TDK drive comes with a little bit better software package. Like Nero 5 software, which the guys at MaxPC like better than Adaptec EZ CD (which comes with the Plex).

Man, I just love how people hear something and just believe it to be truth.

Does anyone have ACTUAL PROOF that the TDK is a REBADGED Plex? No, I didn't think so.

As a matter of fact, Plextor gets some of their drives from OEM Manufaturers (like Sanyo) as well! It's a bit eerie isn't it that the Sanyo CRD-BP1300P (OEM drive, get info at www.burn-proof.com) has all the same specs as the TDK 121032 and Plex 121032. Hmmmm, makes you wonder.

It's a better bet to say that the TDK/Iomega/Plex 121032 are the same drive...NOT rebadged Plex, cause it's MORE LIKELY that ALL THESE DRIVES ARE OEMed Sanyo CRD-BP1300P!!!.

Agreed... it's interesting how when it comes to CD burners, people assert that Plextor simply walks on water. Plextor is ALWAYS better than any non-plextor drive, and if not, then that non-plextor drive MUST be a rebadged plextor!

I also get MaximumPC magazine. The other main reason they chose the TDK over the Plextor was TDK's software that is specifically aimed at music ripping and mp3 handling. The Plextor software just could not match it.

The Plextor is NOT a Sanyo. Plextor is ceritified to make their own drives (using burnproof) where many other manufacturers are not i.e iomega and TDK. If you look at the plex (and its clones) the Sanyo is physically different from the face plate, to the LEDs, to the metal casing.

I like plextor manager 2000 software. It has pretty good .wav extracting program, which is called audio capture 2000.

I usually don't care about programs that come with hardware. Demos and cracks are everywhere...and warez...

So what you're saying is that you KNOW FOR A FACT that Plextor DOESN'T use OEM drives? And that you KNOW FOR A FACT that these drives are NOT the same because they have different faceplates and different shell casing?

Based on that logic, I could build 2 IDENTICAL computers (Motherboard, CPU, HD, Memory, etc...) and just use 2 different cases and say they're NOT the same machine because they have different cases. Not to mention MaximumPC people think they're the same drive. I guess you know better than them?

Sell crazy someplace else, we're all stocked up here.

Yes Plextor makes there own drives. No they are not sanyo drives. If you look up this information at not 1 but various cd burning sites you will see this. Anyways I've owned various plextor drives and the plextor is very much different than the sanyo drives. The TDK and Iomega are rebadged plextors. I know cause between me and my friends we've looked at them and they are exactly the same except for the TDK in which they changed the front plate. As about plextors being able to walk on water. It's true. Kidding. But they have earned that reputation hands down. Of all the CD drives I've used there build quality is unmatched. Same with speed. Recently there jump in to IDE has been nice. Overall though I don't think there IDE parts are quite as nice as there SCSI conterparts. Than again it is a different market. Overall though there IDE parts are still nicer than most other competitors. Some other nice brands I like are TEAC, Yamaha, Ricoh.

What?? I thought Maximum PC thought only the Plex and TDK were identical. Did they mention Sanyo too? JACKHAMMAR argued that the Plex (or TDK) and the Sanyo are not identical. Did Maximum PC say otherwise?

Are you claiming that:
1. the Plex/TDK/Iomega and the Sanyo CRD-BP1300P are that same drive.
2. Sanyo makes them.

I like the plexor manager software - nice stuff but only with plex drives (or in my case an hp oem scsi reader and iomega 121032 both with changed id strings =D

So, explain to me how being 'off the same assembly line' and 'all identical twins' means it's definitely a Plex?

The ONLY thing that can be asserted is that the drives are the same...Just because Plextor happens to be a Manufacturer (not just reseller) DOESN'T AUTOMATICALLY MEAN THAT THESE DRIVES WERE MADE BY PLEXTOR.

Debating this is futile.

HERE'S THE IMPORTANT THING:
No matter which drive you get, the specs and benchmarks ARE SO CLOSE that whichever one you can get a good deal on...GO FOR IT, because you're getting a QUALITY drive!

Sorry to burst your bubble but all the drives being referred to in this thread (Iomega, TDK, Creative Labs) are IN FACT made by PLEXTOR! I have spoken directly with Plextor's Tech support, and after a little prodding they admitted that they made all the aforementioned drives. I personally have a Plextor, a TDK, and 2 Iomegas, and I can tell you they are all exactly the same drive. The casing is identical on all the drives, they perform identically, and the spec out to the decimal using CDSpeed99.

Plextor uses Sanyo parts, but they build their own drives. If they were the same then the firmware for both Sanyos and Plextors would be the same...but their not. Plextor licenses BURN-Proof technology from Sanyo, but they make their own drives.

You may believe anything you like but that does not make it so. I'm not trying to insult you or anything, I am just tired of this senseless discussion. In fact these issues were resolved over a month ago when I posted basically the same information after speaking with Plextor and receiving all my drives.
