locating a wireless hacker

If I find an unknown computer connecting to my router, how do I locate the computer? Is there any way short of going around with a laptop and finding where the signals are strongest?

A directional antenna could pin it down, but what are you gonna do? slap him around? what if it's a kid or something?

Just cut them off with MAC filtering or use encryption.

Why Not?

It's only bandwidth, and it's not like they stole anything - an open unencrypted connection is legal to use.

Doesn't Cisco have a new utility that can perform triangulation with their WAPs?

that's what i was referring to, use it all the time. works pretty well.

It's resource theft, and it may be illegal. It depends on local laws, your lawyer, their lawyer, the judge, the status of the moon, religious incantations, and sunspots.

Here's a thought...get the MAC address. then use a directional antenna, or one with a 30 degree spread and slowly turn around until that mac is associated again.

Then move antenna up and down in that direction. Move around until highest signal strength for that client is achieved.

that should give you a pretty good direction.
