AMD has probably put out signs that Raphael is coming soon. Time to clear out the channel, especially of high-end products since it appears that AMD wants to use AM4 as their low-end product showcase.

Its funny that you say low end, since the 5950x competes very nicely with Intels 12900k high end. I think everybody agrees they trade blows competitively.

Not necessarily. The 5800X3D and the Zen 3 TR Pro (which from the leak that it will start at 12 cores) could be seen as the replacement. I doubt DIY volume is that much because of GPU prices.. and having both might be too much, especially if they forecast Alder Lake to start selling better.

Either way I agree that there are signs that this is a closeout deal.

Yeah good idea to buy these now if anyone had these on their wishlist. At these prices, a certain subset of the population will have the bright idea to add this to their "Buy now, Profit later" pile of stuff.

Zen 4 based replacements should perform something like 40% better MT wise, that s too big of a gap to keep selling EOL SKUs at the same price than the soon to come new line.

Better to clean the warehouses at discounted prices since it allow to retain and even increase marketshare opportunistically.

If only AMD released the R5 5500 two months ago! I fear the "budget rig mindshare advantage" has already gone to Intel.

Surely, if I had known about those CPUs earlier, I wouldn't have bothered to invest in 12th-gen Intel for some budget rigs.

Then again, I don't expect to see "street prices" for the 5500 CPU, like the 3100 and 3300X and 3500(X) before them, to actually sell for as low as $100-110 MSRP.

See below.

Yes, albeit in the Zen3D thread. Anyway, what I think is going on is:

AMD replaces 5800X, 5900X, 5950X with Raphael
AMD replaces 5600X with 5800X3D, 5700X
AMD introduces 5500, 5600 (non-X) as low-end

AM5 becomes the high-end socket, AM4 becomes the low-to-midrange socket. Though AM5 will also serve as the pro business socket as well (Rembrandt Pro) and possibly other functions via Rembrandt. Eventually AM5 + Rembrandt (or a successor) may replace all the AM4 CPUs, but only once DDR5 becomes more common.

AMD is launching Rembrandt APUs for mid-range. They will be on AM5. Thankfully, you can build a somewhat affordable DDR5 platform, albeit with only 16gb of RAM.

But as we can see, they're also refreshing Vermeer on AM4 along with Vermeer-X (also on AM4). They will play slightly different roles.

Intel has been the budget rig for awhile now. The only thing holding the 12th gen back is mobo prices. And yeah, I wonder how many 5500 cpus will be actually available.

The 5700x is tempting but since I've bit on a 5900x, it just grinds my gears more. Maybe I should hold off upgrading and return it. It would have been nice to see these 2-3 months ago or an announcement of them coming at CES. This is really AMD being a day late and a dollar short. 16 months short.

Yeah, its a great time to buy right now as far as the 5950x goes.. I just picked mine up from Bestbuy last night for around $507 after cashback rewards points being used. I couldn't imagine it being a low end budget offering though, but it would be neat if it gets to that point.
I would love to get a few more if they ever drop below the $500 mark.

Right now I can't even imagine where we will be in the next 5 years with the way tech is rapidly improving... I bet the 6000 series are gonna be awesome though and cant wait to snag one on launch day!!
Don't know if I am even still interest in the 5800x3D as I am hearing rumors of no overclocking at all and the core is completely locked down?? Don't know if its true or not but hoping not..

That I understand. But do you intend to have multiple PC's doing such jobs? For instance, start encoding on one 5950X then move to another to start rendering and finally to a third 5950X PC to do photo editing while the previous two finish their tasks?
Yes, I do that now.. I have 6 rigs running at any given time. Will soon be 7 soon as I find time to get my 5950x rig put together. Most of them do work using Adobe Premiere Pro or Kdenlive and some times I sneak in some work using Handbrake or WinFF. All of which maxes out all of my cores. I try not to muck around with the rigs while rendering or encoding otherwise I have gotten errors and artifacting or corruption in the photo's / videos depending how large the job is and how high the quality and bit rates are ect..
