for the past 8 months.

I get their emails periodically announcing "specials".. well, the latest offered a 10k discount off a 4dr supercrew.. so i figured I'd email asking about a new Explorer for the wife.

I email and asked what they had in stock that had leather + 3rd row. he responded with 2 options - priced at 32k+ reduced to 26k+ with my "X-plan" discount & current rebates.

basically 6k off MSRP!?!?!

If people are actually in the market to buy a vehicle, you'd think they would be jumping at the chance to unload some stock instead of handing out the same discounts I could have gotten over the past 6 years.

Just tell them it's not enough, you're ready to buy, but they need to do more. They'll tell you of course, that's the best they can do, and then you walk. They'll be back in touch, dealerships are very very hungry right now. They'll really work with you to unload an SUV especially.

Looking at Edmunds, invoice cost is only $2k less than MSRP(base XLT 4WD with no options)

yeah.. it looks like across the board, MSRP is 2k above invoice.

There's currently a $3,000 cash incentive on the Explorer. So the guy gave you invoice price, minus the incentive and then some more. And, that's the first price he threw at you, what exactly are you complaining about?

So you expect the dealer to sell at a loss?

yes, i do.

ummm... what? 😕

Frankly, I'd expect most domestic dealers to jump at offloading a SUV right now, even at some loss. Otherwise they're holding on to unsold stock and be forced to sell it for a larger loss, down the road, when it become last year's model. Such is the sad state of auto sales right now.

However, the price they gave OP does seem to be for some loss anyway.
