Local Comp Show Coming to town, Need a New HDD

Hey,

Well I'm in the market for a new HDD, preferably around the 60GB. As long as it's ATA/100 I'm happy, I don't need 133, just needs to be ATA/100 and 7200RPM and IDE.

Well currently I have a 30GB 75GXP IBM drive, that's been great to me for the last year, and I wouldn't trade it for anything, still going strong and great performance, good overclocker too.

But, well the time has come and I need more space. What drives have been strong lately, I've used Quantum, and always been happy with them, but they were bought out by Maxtor.

However, what's been a strong drive lately, good performance, and stability, along with low failure rates?

I was looking to go with a Maxtor DiamondStar, but I'd just like other people's input.

But I can tell you now, I will not go with Western Digital, or Segate.

As much as I like IBM drives, they do have a high failure rate, and I'd prefer not to gamble with it.

The 60GXP models ironed out most of the problems...

I don't know what you're worrying about failure rate for anyways, considering you already have the highest prone failure rate hard drive just dying (no pun intended) to quit on ya 😉.
 
True enough 😉

But you know what I mean, I have this drive, and who knows what'll happen in the future, knock on wood, so yeah.. Just want to get a drive that is known for reliability.

With the recent IBM GXP issues and good alternatives, I won't buy one. After working as a systems analyst for 4 years, I can say I will never buy Seagate since I've seen more Seagates die than all other brands combined. I own 6 Western Digital drives and love them to death. They are fast and reliable. Any future drives I need to buy will be WD.

 
Yeah, I'm not too big on Seagate either... I'm not too partial with WD, since they gave me a lot issues and died out in the past.....

Now that I look at, my only choices that remain are really IBM, Maxtor(Quantum), Fujitsu, and that's about it.. any others?

The Maxtor (Quantum) 40gig D740x for $75 from newegg is probably the best deal i've seen for a long time. I bought one for my new comp, and it seems faster than my 40GB 75gxp.
 
for myself i have had two WD's get smart drive failure in less than 3 to 6 months of use. on my latest ibm 40 gb 60 GXP series it got a loose ide pin on it. i have heard this is a problem with ibm drives as the solder joints come loose easily.

I've had 2 western digital's go on me in a year (a 40 and 60 gig 7200RPM)

Meanwhile, my 40 gig maxtor has been chugging along w/out a problem....

I do love western digital drives when they work, and will continue to get more in the future, but I do think Maxtor has really shown up IBM in terms of reliability and performance.

Pair of Maxtors here. Used to have them in a heavily used RAID array and they've proven to be reliable champs. I don't think you can go very wrong with a Maxtor right now. Just make sure the cache is at least 2MB...
