Lobster going for $3.00 a pound...

I heard 9on the radio) that catches were up and the demand was down. Lobster prices in Maine were as low as $3.00 a pound.

Although I have fished commercially in Alaska, I'm not an expert on Lobster. But I have been in Maine in October in the early 80's paying $1.89 a pound for live lobsters at small shops. I think they're cheaper in October because they molt.

Wow I would eat that everyday. Or build a farm and just buy a bunch.

I used to cook at a restaurant in Kodiak, Alaska. We served steamed lobsters. We kept them locked up in one of the crab tanks at the cannery I worked at. They were happy in Alaskan seawater.

That was before the Exxon Valdez spill. It's probably better to make your own seawater now.

When are we going to see the lower prices trickle down to us? Lobster tail at Costco is still $27 a pound.

What about king crab legs? I bought a 20 lb box from Costco at $12 a pound 2 weeks ago. I bought it as low as $9 a pound in the past with bulk discount.

Blame the economy and the credit crisis

Lobster prices take dive

Maine lobstermen are talking about tying up their boats, and dealers are suggesting they haul fewer traps to get prices back up as the global economic crisis sends shivers through the state?s signature fishery. The wholesale price of Maine lobster has plunged more than 20 percent in the past week to as little as $2.60 a pound in some harbors. Dealers say the credit crisis has effectively shut off orders from major processors in Canada. Meanwhile, consumers are losing their appetite for the seafood as they watch the financial markets tumble. ?This is the worst time for this to happen,? said Peter McAleney, owner of New Meadows Lobster in Portland, Maine.. At the end of September, the wholesale price of lobster was between $3.50 and $4 a pound along the coast, lobstermen and dealers say.

$3 is the average boat price? That's insane considering the rise in cost of fuel and bait alone. My grandfather just sold his boat a few months ago after fishing for nearly 25 years, the industry is just too tough for anyone who doesn't fish in deeper waters.

After some googling, it seems most places consider minimum 300 lbs as wholesale bulk. Cost on 2 lbs or greater lobster is around $7.50 lb. Add another 75 cents a pound for shipping from airport to airport. About $2,500 for 300 lbs of live lobsters or $8.34 a pound. If you can get 3-4 families or friends to split the cost, it's something to consider.

The claws > the tail. Unfortunately, there isn't much meat in the claws. Overcooked lobster tail can be very underwhelming and outright disappointing if you consider the price. The claws will make you a believer, however.
