If they are being sold like crazy, it's probably those that are losing faith in the whole Crypto currency seeing what has been going on lately and are cutting their losses and getting out and getting the most they can for their inflated price hardware while they can.
But just curious, where do you see used 7970's being sold like crazy?

Buying two 265s is not a better idea in my opinion. You're spending nearly the same $$$ but you're getting only about 100 extra hashes. However, you are wasting an additional slot so you're lucky if you break even on the marginal cost of an additional PCI-e slot.

$320 for a 7970 with lifetime warranty is a good deal on paper. However, XFX cards are not only under-performers, but their 7 series cards are notorious for overheating issues which I can vouch for after using an XFX 7850, 7870 DD, and 7870 Tahiti LE. Odds are you probably won't be able to get close to 700kH/s with an XFX 7970, unless you do major tweaking and overclocking with aftermarket cooling. At that point, it's not worth the $$$.

Actually I have seen a few 290 & 290Xs being sold at few forums not loads though.

The most surprising thing about that it that they are being sold at close to retail prices.

This is because

1) The supply of the cards is finally & actually improving. Also Newegg has started dropping prices little by little.
These are people who have used (or abused) those cards for months & now are planning to get out before the prices come down.

I wouldn't touch a single card out of those.

2) Cryptos are going down & Summer is coming. Lots of miners are loosing their faith, so trying to get out before its too late i.e cards return to regular prices.

All in all this summer is going to be fun.
I am going to enjoy seeing Idiots who bought the cards at inflated prices, trying to sell them & get out.

A few pictures of burnt rigs of people who don't have proper cooling would just add some icing to the cake.

In all my advice would be to wait & buy a new card at let those loosers get stuck with their abused GPUs.

I would say they forsee the future of crypto mining, and that GPUs will not be quite as profitable. There will be a rash of cards that have been abused mining 24/7 for sale soon and I would be wary.

Don't forget, summertime is coming.
Takes a lot to cool those rooms full of 7970s hashing away ...

Meh, I see no more for sale than usual or over any other GPU in there.

http://www.overclock.net/f/14779/video

A fair bit of AMD cards there.

I find the pricing more important than the quantity.

A thing to note that most of them are at inflated MSRP or just a tad bit higher than original MSRP.

I was under the impression that value goes down the more you use it.

Those people didn't get that memo. Lowering prices at retailers should deliver it to them soon though.

Card prices going down probably more to do with AMD improving supply.

I don't know why one would sell their cards at loss versus continuing to mine, you'd have to be pretty dumb to do that. 6 R9 290s should still pull in over $1k a month.

Whats cracking me up is people selling their 290's and offering to do straight trades for 780 Ti's.

Delusional mutch?

I plan on selling mine soon because the value is up. 7970 is 2 years old at still selling for around $400. Amazing.

Because:

- Warmer temps are right around the corner, the 7970 runs pretty damn hot
- People are greedy and would rather have $10/day in their pocket versus $5 in their pocket

Most of the sellers are probably trying to recycle cards they bought at the peak of the mining boom over the last 3 months and recoup their "investment" dollars, even though they likely got their money's worth just from mining, and then some. What's funny is that this cycle will "probably" repeat itself in several months time.

Newegg was listing a 280x for under $300, so things are looking better for pricing. Just needs to set off panic selling in the craigslist/ebay used market...

Like everyone else is saying... cryptocurrency profitability has been substantially down this past week, summer is coming up (so electricity costs go up - instead of getting free heating, you're paying for extra A/C), and it looks like the absurd price gouging on new AMD cards might finally be starting to come to an end. The less committed / more easily spooked miners are looking to get out of the game while they can still make a profit on their gear.

I'm pretty sure its already been determined that it has been a supply issue all along. When NE or any other big seller only had 4-5 cards left they set the price higher and higher, rather than going out of stock.

I don't think that can explain the situation in the used market.

If it was just a supply issue of producing new cards, then the price of old/used video cards would not have skyrocketed. Look at the price of even very old 5850, 5870, etc. cards, they went way up too.

But, we have seen the price of new cards and used cards following the same trajectory, so there must have been increased demand as well. All prices shot way up, so long as the card could be used for mining, which indicates demand-driven in both used and new cards.

TheStilt BIOS for XFX 7970 brought me to 730kh w/ minimal tweaks, stock voltage/cooling @ 73ºC

7970s/280X are absolute beasts for mining...my 290s do about 820kh/s @stock but sound like jet engines while doing so. Getting 730kh/s out of a 7970 is just amazing.

I'm kind of tempted to sell my 7970. For what they're going for, an upgrade to a Radeon 290 or a GeForce 780 is barely more than $100 if I sell.

Used AMD cards are at its highest pricepoint, people in my town are selling used 280X's for $400 and people are actually buying them, most of those used 280X's has been through mining torture so they're probably near the end of operating life. I put my 7850 up the other day and within 30 minutes I got a call about it and sold it. People are anxious on getting their hands on AMD cards to get into the coin craze.

Frankly I don't give a F about bitcoin.

Agreed, it actually went down to $329 when I clicked on the link to display the product page... Plus you get a free copy of BF4 when you register your card on XFX's site.
