loading xp pro

Hi, I hope I put this the right folder, I recently installed a new harddrive in my sons computer, and xp pro I had would not install (error message) (file missing clean disk and retry) I tried that several times with no luck so I ordered a OEM version of just XP do I need to reformat the HD? as part of the XP Pro is on there (installatio files etc.) any help would be appreciated thanks

If you're starting with an original installation CD, I can think of two possiblities:

1. The CD is defective.

2. The CD/DVD drive is not reading the disk correctly.

Have you tried using another CD/DVD drive? If you have another drive around, you can temporarily hook it up without bothering to mount it permanently in the machine. Just set it on an insulated surface, and run the cables to it. If you get the same results on the other drive, there's a good chance the CD is defective. If so, return it for another copy.

Thanks, The only other cd drive is a sata and the one my sons is ide, the version of XP pro is several years old! I am more concerned about the harddrive since it is new and I am in set up how would I reformat??

What part of the installation is giving you that error? Is it at the start?

If the motherboard has SATA, you should be able to connect that CD/DVD drive temporarily and use it to test the CD. You'll have to make sure SATA and booting from CD are enabled in the CMOS.

There are a few things you can try to test the drive:

1. If the drive didn't come with CD with the manufacturer's diagnostic tools, go to their website, and download them. They probably have a version that runs from a bootable CD, floppy or flash drive. If the drive is still under warranty, and it's defective, they will probably require you run them before they'll issue an RMA.
   
2. Connect the drive as a slave on a working machine, and run SCANDISK.
   
3. Use a utilitiy like Partition Magic on a bootable CD. It's faster and gives you more info and options than SCANDISK.
