So I tried load linux on on my Shuttle MV42 motherboard yesterday. The MV42 is an old Socket 478 board that has an S3 ProSavage 3D video chipset onboard.
First Try: Debian 3.1 - could never get X to start
2nd Try: Fedora Core 4 - Worked OK, It would not give me the option of 1600 x 1200, highest was 1600 x 1050 I think, and the video wasn't stable. Had some trearing and flickering reguard less of resolution selected.
3rd Try: Ubuntu 5.04 - The best so far, auto detected everything correctly 1600 x 1200 is availiable and looks pretty good. A little flickering on the edges when you move a window on the screen.
I thought an older board like this would be a great candidate for an easy load of linux. The video output is clear and stable under windows XP with default drivers.
I'm trying to convert my whole house to Linux, this PC was the test. Hopefully it is just some strange issue with the cheap S3 video.
Any thoughts??
