"load needed DLLs for kernel" problem

Hi guys,

I have an Abit NF7-S Motherboard, AMD XP 2500+, 120GB Matrox SATA HDD

For some odd reason, I left my PC whilst extracting a .rar file. When i returned, I saw the logon screen and when I tried to login or press ctrl_alt_del, it gave a quick BSOD and restarted. It said something about 'kernel' in there i think.

So I restart my PC and it tells me:

Windows could not start because of a problem in the software.
load needed DLLs for kernel

I tried SAFEMODE first, with networking, without, and command prompt. All stopped whilst loading KDCOM.dll .

So I search it up in google and the best thing I find is that you need to repair your xp installation. Sounds pretty easy right.

So I fire up my XP SP1 cd and it loads the blue setup thing, and it tells me that I don't have a HDD in there, or it doesnt detect my HDD.

My HDD is SATA Matrox 120gb so ofcourse I would need the SATA drivers for the thing to work. So I download te drivers, put them on a floppy, and go through the setup again.

I pick the Silicon Image 3112 for XP driver and then I continue with the setup. I press R on the menu screen, and then in the bottm, it tells me "Examining 117240 MB on id 0" + alot of other stuff, but it stays frozen at that.

So then I tried loading my drivers in ERD and its the same problem, the thing won't load at all.

Now I have a SATA drive here that just can't be accessed by anything. If i restart, it tells me the error "load needed DLLs for kernel."

Just recenly (about a week ago), I replaced my CPU fan / heatsink with a new one, and I reset my bios. When I went into bios, I found out that in the boot sequence, when my HDD was listed as Serial ATA was now listed as HDD-0. I changed it, but it didn't make any difference.

Now, I am stuck and I dont know what else to do. I have another PC at home, and a laptop, but neither can read SATA harddrives.

What should i do?

Free bump for you. Plus..

Does Powmax (free proggie from Maxtor for checking drive fitness) work for SATA HDDs? If so, I'd run it on the off chance that something happened to the HDD.

Might also have a look over at NforcersHQ.com. There's an Abit section for the NF7-S, you should get some good SATA help/info there. Same at the Abit forums.

Hey man,

Thanks for the bump.

Now i have some unfortunate news, maxtor's powermax utlity told me "The drive is failing"

it also gave me a RMA number so i can get one, BUT there must be a way I can recover somethings from there.

I have another PC's harddrive I can use to plug into my system and set my current drive as slave... I wonder if this will work at all.

Also, should I try running any chkdisk and see if it can repair or do anything?

There must be something I can do to retrieve data without sending it to some 3rd party.

Damn, this so sucks.

I dunno, but you might as well try it.

If powermax mentioned anything specific about the drive failure, might include it in your post as maybe somebody will know something helpful.

Only 2 HDD tricks I have every heard of are (1) freezer trick and (2) using a zero-fill (or Low level format) to fix bad sectors sometimes. You don't wanna do the later as it will nuke you data etc.
