lmhosts.sam file

I have been having a lot of trouble with the lmhosts.sam file and logging in to a VPN connection.

Basically, the lmhosts file does not get imported at boot up. So when I go to access the exchange server, it does not know the host name because the named address in the lmhosts file does not get used. If after I connect to the Internet, I import the file again - it works. This however is a long and annoying process.

Is there any way that I can do this through use of a batch file or something similar? DNS does not work through the VPN connection, so I am limited to lmhosts or another way of getting this done.

Running Windows 2000 Pro and the VPN is a watchguard firebox.

Did you rename lmhosts.sam to lmhosts? I'm not much of a windows guy so I may be wrong, but I believe that is a required step.

It doesnt really matter what the file is called, as long as it is modified to hold the addresses that you want, and imported.

I have done this.

lmhosts.sam has to be renamed to lmhosts. Also, you can try to reload the file by running the command (without quotes):
"nbtstat -R"
