He can state he does not ship first (depends on who and heatware personally) and if the buyer does not like that they can shop elsewhere.

Personallly i like the shipping first. but since i only have 4 or so heatware myself it dont happen. heh come to think of it i dont buy much anyway.

Of course he doesn't have to. Then again I don't have to buy. Everyone gets up in arms over it, it's really not that big of a deal - If you can't reach satisfactory terms you don't have a deal.

I'm generally quite open to paying first, even with very little heat (~10 is generally fine with me). Everyone has to start somewhere & having little heat does not make someone a troll. However with someone who registered 6 months ago & has only done 3-4 trades I'm probably going to want them to ship first.

The only reason I even posted this thread is because I found it hilarious. I've been here the better part of 6 years, have 32K+ posts, 75 Heat evals & I'm being told by a complete newbie that I'm lacking in qualifications to ask him to ship first.

oh i agree he is a idiot.

75 heatware is more then enough to have me ship first. 2nd you been on the fourum long enough to know you arent going do something stupid over a $70 item.

I wouldnt have trouble shipping the item to you.

but the remarks from others saying he has to is wrong. he does not have to do anything. if the two parties can't agree then move on.

Not that I have traded in the past two years or so (I have like 11 heat from 2002-2003), but I don't see why shipping first is such a good thing. Its easier to cancel payment than to get your shipped item back. Not that I won't ship first, but I don't really like it.

a) You want to purchase an item
b) You do the proper research on seller
c) If you want item, you send money first
d) Recieve item

You don't go into a store, take a TV home and tell the store that they will send you a money order in a few days. You want the item, you pay first regardless of heat/ebay. It is up to you to do the research on the seller. If you don't want to send money first, then find someone else you are more confortable dealing with.

That is a bit whacked of him IMO. Your history here should have been more than enough in the credentials dept. to trust you.

I don't even trade with sub 20 deals/1yr+ members unless they are extremely eager to prove they are not a troll by shipping or paying first. Traders can use any criteria they want, but I think they will find many put them on the DNT list if they don't want to "pay their dues" first ;)

Absolutely not. I have a very positive attitude towards trading. I've done it for years now (just recently on AT)

There is no store, no e-tailer, nowhere of legitimacy in which I go to the checkout page of the store and select "How about YOU ship first and I might pay you later".

I grew up on eBay, so that plays a role. I feel if the HEAT's too low or you don't agree, just find that item from someone else. :)

With ebay there is a 3rd party to establish accountability (particularly if PayPal is used).

Within the hardware community we have no such authority, and a system was devised that allows a track record to be established.

The system may not be perfect, but it works quite well for most people.

If you don't like it (or aren't willing to trust it) you can always use Ebay.

When in Rome...

His position is perfectly understandable. He acknowledges that some potential buyers will not buy under these conditions and that is their right. But its also his right to only sell under conditions he feels comfortable with.

As for ebays buyer protection...its really a huge joke. You basically send your complaints to a black hole, and if you lost only $50 or something they aren't going to do jack. Overclockers forums has a very rabid set of mods in their FS forums who have a much better reputation than ebay. They can be real jerks sometimes (out of necessity), but I never really see anyone getting ripped off over there. Ebay is really to big and sloppy for them to do much. I won't comment on paypal protection since I haven't had any real experience with it. But there's a reason I have a "no more than $100" rule with ebay...I can't afford to lose more than that. :p

But would you walk into a store, set some money down on the counter and say "I'll be back for my item in 3 to 5 days, depending on traffic?"

The argument works either way. There is no end to this debate, as it is a matter of personal taste.
