Fire officials say hoarded gasoline led to fire

DARTMOUTH, Mass. (AP) ? Authorities say a couple trying to beat the high cost of gasoline accidentally caused a fire that burned their apartment complex.

Fire Chief Richard Arruda says the couple had about 45 gallons of gasoline in nine plastic jugs stacked in a closet that also housed an air conditioning unit.

The gasoline fumes apparently set off Thursday's fire, which was quickly put out by a sprinkler system.

No one was seriously hurt, but residents of eight units of the complex were displaced.

Investigators believe the couple was storing the gas because of rising prices. Officials say they might face civil penalties for violating the fire code.

forgive my ignorance, but wouldnt sprinkler systems ruin electronic equipment etc

i wouldnt want one in my place

one of the reasons I didn't want an attached dwelling even though there are so many steals on them right now.

Uhm yep they do. We actually had the sprinklers go off in the dorms this year because some idiot can't cook, a lot of people lost their computers.

Pic your poison. Shorted out electrical equipment, or melted electrical equipment.

this is why I would never live in a condo. Too many stupid asses around the planet, I don't want to be any closer than I have to be.

of course, but it's an apartment complex. they don't care about your crap only keeping the building from burning down.

Wow, even if gas goes up a $1 per gallon how much are they looking to save. Maybe $45 max, but the hassle and the danger of storing gas. How can they stand the smell of gas inside the apartment?

They'll save about the same as the cost of the buckets 🙂

wow, i can't imagine storing gasoline in my apartment or house. Not only it is a huge fire hazard (durr) but gasoline gives off an odor that can't be good for you to breath in all the time.

I remember years ago reading about a guy who had a frozen fuel line in his car. He took some gasoline into the house and heated it up on the stove.
Hilarity ensued.

I think i'd rather have a few broken pieces of electronics than a burned down house.
