I lived a very short walk to my work for several years while in college. It was a 24 hr business (large hotel) and I have literally had a bellman knocking on my door at 7AM because they morning manager couldn't figure out something I did the night before (and my phone was turned off... for a reason). Good and bad things about it.

It's nice, but for most people, living within a 10 minute walk to work isn't really any more convenient than living within a 10 minute drive. I don't think I'd use that as a major criteria for buying a house.

Being an hour from work and moving within 15 minutes, it's definitely a money saver because the commute is less. So yes that would be a very good thing if you could walk everyday! You definitely came out with a good chunk of change at the end of the month not buying fuel as often in the economy.

Yeah, living near the workplace is great for the employer to abuse the employee. Why would anyone make a personal life decision on the proximity of their workplace unless they are self-employed?

I live for me, not my employer.

speaking from experience (used to live right down the block from my office), it's a bit of both.

having basically no commute was amazing. definitely something I miss... I'd punch out at 6 pm and be home by 6:05 pm.

on the other hand, sometimes it felt like I never left work. this was back when I worked at a NOC, and knowing I was so close to the office, I was very high on the on-call list compared to my coworkers who lived 45-60 minutes away. there's also the annoyance of running into coworkers all the time on your days off just while running errands.

Right now I live about 15 minutes away from work.

I don't think I would ever want to live closer than 10 mins away. Or farther than 25 mins away.

Good thing.
Though when I lived 4 miles from work I lost weight, when I lived a few hundred yards away I put it on. (working on a definition of "walking distance" = anything under 5 miles).

I'm a 20 min walk and love it. Being close is nice as you will save money on fuel or public transport costs. But I'd look more at what the area's like.
