i just saw that a house like 500 feet from where i work is available for about 100$k

instead of driving 40 minutes i could walk in a few and get there!

has anyone been this close to work before? is it a good thing or a bad thing?
 
It's a good thing. Not having to deal with a vehicle and pay tor gas on your daily commute is a huge benefit and stress relief.
 
My wife does and I can't think of a single drawback. I guess if it was a crappy neighborhood or something it would be bad.
 
of course it's a good thing! If it's a great job and you stay there for a while, you will save TONS on gas and car related stuff. AND you save a ton on time you don't have to spend in traffic jams.

That means you leave later, get more sleep, and get home earlier 🙂
 
It's a great thing. You get 80 mins more per day to do whatever you want, that's a massive difference to your every day life.

Depends if your boss is the type to ring you up and get you to nip into work every time there's a problem as you just live next door and its no problem for you to get there.
 
I lived like this for the past 7 years and loved it. What you didn't mention in the OP and I don't know if you realize it but being able to go home during your lunch hour is awesome. Not only would you save money from your commute but if you cook, you could save so much more on just eating at home. I'd go home to take naps when it's a slow day.

Anyway I work like 5 miles from home now and it's been depressing compared to what I had. Still, I walk home from work a few nights a week. 😛

That's a totally separate issue and bosses of that persuasion don't really care how near or far you live with regard to work.
 
Depends. Your situation where it is 500ft, i don't see any downsides unless your company handles hazardous waste. I lived about a mile from work at one point, it was great until i forgot something and had to walk back to get it.
 
I live two to four blocks away (0.3 miles according to google maps). I bike in and back. It's less than a couple minutes each way. (As opposed to seven walking)

It's great. Going home for lunch is the best. I'm really going to try to do the same thing with my next job but that might be difficult. Who knows.

I like to have separation between my living, working, and social spaces.

When I was in college, I didn't like I living in the dorms because I felt like I was always at school. So, I moved a few blocks away into the college neighborhood. That feeling didn't really go away. I moved a few miles away and the 20 minute bus ride to and from school gave me the separation I was looking for.

I now live about 5 miles from work and 7 miles from where most of my friends live and socialize. A lot of people think it's weird, but its a heck of a lot cheaper and I have the separation that I desire. The 15 minute drive to and from work and social stuff is great.

Most people I know would rather live/work/socialize in the same area. They also prefer to have smaller, minimal houses. I have a bigger house than I really need because I like to have separate spaces for separate activities/mindsets. For example, I have two office-type rooms. One is a more minimal room where I browse the internet, program, and play games. I keep this room clean so I can easily focus my mind without distractions. The other room is where I work on electronics and other projects. It's very messy as I leave tools and in-progress projects laying around.

Good if your job is very stable. Bad if you could be laid off next year and have to look out your window and be reminded of it.

Not necessarily. For example, I live about 10min from my office and used to get called into work whenever there was any issues with our servers. A guy was hired and lives about 2 minutes walking. I never get calls anymore 😀
 
Great thing.

Especially if there are shops and restaurants also within walking distance. Huge savings, not just of money, but your time.

eh there is nothing really in the town except the company (its very small)

but there are stores like 5 miles away

its an otherwise rural area so thats normal
 
My wife has pretty much always found a job within 500 feet of our homes here in Lexington and it has ALWAYS been great. She currently walks to work across the street (school).
 
I live within a 5 minute drive, but living within walking would be super awesome. Imagine not needing to clear snow off the car or warm it up in the morning. Just go out the door and walk. Even though it may take 5 minutes to drive it can be a 15-20 minute ordeal in the morning if the plow passed overnight, often time I don't have.
