Living in an Extended Stay Hotel

$59.99 a night plus 17% hotel tax (Houston).

That sounds pretty expensive but compared to an apartment:
* -Don't have to pay for electricity, utilities, cable, and maybe internet. Wireless internet is $5 per stay, but can't tell if wired internet is included.
* No deposits.
* No application, installation, or other one time fees.
* Rent amount is pretty comparable, but this is without any short term premiums.
* No contracts or other apartment BS. Probably much safer and gets cleaned before each move in

Hotel Amenities:
* Kitchen with refrigerator, microwave, and stovetop
* Workspace with computer dataport
* Free local phone calls
* Personalized voice mail
* Iron and full size ironing board
* On site guest laundry
* Dining and cooking utensils provided
* Wireless Internet - one time fee of $4.99 per stay
* Pet Friendly Rooms ? View Our Pet Policy

My plan:
* Do laundry and get everything ready to go Sunday afternoon.
* Go to sleep early and head out early Monday morning to beat traffic. Keep clothes,toiletries, etc in suitcase in my truck, which should be safe in a parking garage.
* Monday evening go to HEB and buy food.
* Work for week.
* Check out Friday morning, work, and go back to college town or home town (1.5 and 1 hours respectively).

Cost Benefit Analysis:

* Rent and utilities would probably come out to about $1000 a month based on the lease I was about to sign earlier this year. BUT that was on the lower end of rent and was for a 7 month lease term. Rent will be much higher when the short term premium is added. I'd say at least $1,200 total if I wanted a halfway decent place. I'm expecting this to be even more.
* If I were to drive to work from home, 42.9 miles each and 58 minutes to 90 minutes according to the Google. My truck gets about 18 mpg, but I think it's a lot worse in traffic with all the stopping and going so about 15 mpg. Total mileage per day is 85.8, per week is 429, and per month is 1716. So 1716 m / 15 mpg = 114 gallons a month. 114 gallons at $2 is $228 a month. Assuming gas stays around $2, which is probably won't by the time summer arrives. Plus the amount of wear and tear on my car.

Three scenarios:
* Apartment- ~$1200 + $50 for short commute. Deal with bullshit.
* Hotel- $1123 (4 nights a week, includes tax) - $100 (promo code, one per check in) + $50 for short commute. "Moving" a lot, but usually no more than a suitcase or two. Will do some traveling with work.
* Home- $300 (gas) or free (?) for you. Parents, privacy, 2.5 hours wasted on commute, but food is mostly free.

Are there any hidden costs I'm not realizing for the hotel? I don't really have a reason to stay in Houston proper over the weekends and don't want to deal with apartment finding/management bullshit.

Roommates haven't really been taken into consideration, but I don't really want to live with a random person. Although my current roommate at college, may room with me over the summer in the apartment or hotel.

What am I missing?

$60/night sounds like a crappy motel room that won't even give you enough room to stretch your arms out.

I don't think I could live that transient of a lifestyle, not hanging my hat in the same place every night.

It doesn't look too bad. I literally just need a place to do some work on my laptop and go to sleep. I don't need plenty of room.

You'd be a total slave to your schedule to stay within your budgetary parameters using the hotel.

There is no way in hell I'd chose that option.

I spent last week at another hotel owned by that chain (under the Homestead Studio Suites brand). The room and clientele was similar to what you'd expect at Motel 6 but the room had a fridge, stove top, microwave (no oven - important if you plan to eat pizza), and a minimal set of dishes. The hotel was located in a less enchanting section of town but at $50/night it was also about half the rate of nicer hotels in Phoenix this time of year. They don't provide daily linen service and the room wasn't as clean as it could have been. Other than that, it was fine.

What do you mean exactly? I usually don't do much on the weekdays since I'm dead tired after work and don't want to stay up too late.

Westchase. It's the one right off Beltway 8 (Hardy Tollroad?). Need a roommate? 🙂

I was expecting the clientele to be a little higher since it looks like they cater to business people and this location is surrounded by businesses. Daily linen service isn't a big deal. I can bring extra towels from home and wash them on the weekends back at home.

I drove from home (Kingwood) to the area where the extended stay hotel is everyday for a summer. It really wasn't so bad and you save a lot of money by staying at home

rent in Houston doesn't really seem that expensive, if craigslist is any indication, bearing in mind that you seem fine with a basic studio.

It's pretty much a setup not to have any life whatsoever outside of work and managing your living situation while paying for the privilege.

Stay at home and deal with the commute or get a small sublet for less money.

I live in Kingwood currently. The drive ranges from 1 to 1.5 hours each way. I'd have to get up really early like I do now. I may need to learn to drive stick and use my dads old pickup.

I personally would rent an apartment or house. I have tried the stay in hotels thing and it is not worth it... That is unless you have a a wife or kids that you want to go back home and see.

You might also want to talk to some of the people where you are going to work and see if they have any suggestions.

Good luck

Do you look good in jeans? 😉

ps. I like the idea of the renting the extended stay place. If you dont like it you can drop the whole thing no questions asked. Sounds like a winner.

Then again the whole point is saving 2 or 3 hours a day but if I'm not doing anything...I might as well just drive haha. I'll probably decide last minute between home and hotel. Or maybe alternate.
