$59.99 a night plus 17% hotel tax (Houston).
That sounds pretty expensive but compared to an apartment:
* -Don't have to pay for electricity, utilities, cable, and maybe internet. Wireless internet is $5 per stay, but can't tell if wired internet is included.
* No deposits.
* No application, installation, or other one time fees.
* Rent amount is pretty comparable, but this is without any short term premiums.
* No contracts or other apartment BS. Probably much safer and gets cleaned before each move in
Hotel Amenities:
* Kitchen with refrigerator, microwave, and stovetop
* Workspace with computer dataport
* Free local phone calls
* Personalized voice mail
* Iron and full size ironing board
* On site guest laundry
* Dining and cooking utensils provided
* Wireless Internet - one time fee of $4.99 per stay
* Pet Friendly Rooms ? View Our Pet Policy
My plan:
* Do laundry and get everything ready to go Sunday afternoon.
* Go to sleep early and head out early Monday morning to beat traffic. Keep clothes,toiletries, etc in suitcase in my truck, which should be safe in a parking garage.
* Monday evening go to HEB and buy food.
* Work for week.
* Check out Friday morning, work, and go back to college town or home town (1.5 and 1 hours respectively).
Cost Benefit Analysis:
* Rent and utilities would probably come out to about $1000 a month based on the lease I was about to sign earlier this year. BUT that was on the lower end of rent and was for a 7 month lease term. Rent will be much higher when the short term premium is added. I'd say at least $1,200 total if I wanted a halfway decent place. I'm expecting this to be even more.
* If I were to drive to work from home, 42.9 miles each and 58 minutes to 90 minutes according to the Google. My truck gets about 18 mpg, but I think it's a lot worse in traffic with all the stopping and going so about 15 mpg. Total mileage per day is 85.8, per week is 429, and per month is 1716. So 1716 m / 15 mpg = 114 gallons a month. 114 gallons at $2 is $228 a month. Assuming gas stays around $2, which is probably won't by the time summer arrives. Plus the amount of wear and tear on my car.
Three scenarios:
* Apartment- ~$1200 + $50 for short commute. Deal with bullshit.
* Hotel- $1123 (4 nights a week, includes tax) - $100 (promo code, one per check in) + $50 for short commute. "Moving" a lot, but usually no more than a suitcase or two. Will do some traveling with work.
* Home- $300 (gas) or free (?) for you. Parents, privacy, 2.5 hours wasted on commute, but food is mostly free.
Are there any hidden costs I'm not realizing for the hotel? I don't really have a reason to stay in Houston proper over the weekends and don't want to deal with apartment finding/management bullshit.
Roommates haven't really been taken into consideration, but I don't really want to live with a random person. Although my current roommate at college, may room with me over the summer in the apartment or hotel.
