What do you mean by that? You wanted to renew your contract with your current carrier first (20 months from now), get new subsidized phones, and *then* switch to T-Mobile and have your ETF paid?

No, I think he means that he wants to take his 2-year-old devices to the new network once the contract has expired.

If you have a Galaxy SII, that's still a perfectly capable phone and there isn't necessarily a need for a new one except for the fun of it.

Edit: Apparently the AT&T SII doesn't work well on T-Mobile's HSPA+, so that particular scenario doesn't work well. You'd have to be careful on a phone-by-phone basis.

No, it's not. TMobile has a AWS license that cover the entire Continental US with at LEAST 20mhz of spectrum, 30mhz in a lot of places. This isn't even about them refarming 1900mhz to HSPA. This is about building out the AWS HSPA+ or LTE network to cover their existing network footprint in places they've only deployed GSM 1900.

On another note, the commercial they showed at the end of the show is super lame, but looks like something they'd actually run, which is too bad because it sucks.

Correct, except that there may be a period before AT&T unlocks the phone for use on TMobile, so you may have to go a week without a phone if you do it that way.

You'd also want to really make sure the phone you're bringing supports AWS HSPA+. Something a LOT of AT&T phones didn't do until 2013.

You only get the ETF paid if you trade in your phone, and you buy a phone from them.

Huh, no. You get the ETF paid up to $350 if you switched, and then in addition to that you can get up to $300 per phone by trading in your phones, but only if you want to. It's up to a $650 total per line. Well at least that's my understanding after watching that presentation.
