I work for Verizon and I know the FiOS product manager--he told me it'll be awhile before they can get the licenses for DC but I don't remember the reasoning. I'll point him to the petition, we'll see if it makes a difference?

When I was looking for a new apartment, I refused to get a place with that craptastic service! My parents have FiOS and it totally rocks.

I would bet their plans to not deploy FIOS have something to do with the trainwreck known as the DC government.

I support your cause... because I was without FIOS for 2 years while my neighbors did and now I know what it's like to have it. 😉

I could be wrong, but I think you guys are in U-verse country--Durham'll probably be an AT&T market for fiber. Not sure how competitive these fiber markets are, or if it's even possible for two competitors to lay fiber in the same market? The billboards and advertising are part of a national plan to build brand awareness and pent-up demand. Judging by the DC initiative, I'd say its working!

 
FYI, just spoke with someone who manages the project pipeline for all Verizon data products, including FiOS. Apparently one of the big barriers to deploying in dense urban environments is the sheer cost of digging through well-established infrastructure, as well as getting the permits and concessions to dig it up and lay fiber. That's been the biggest barrier so far, and its why you see FiOS coming to the suburbs first.

That said, he did give me some info on DC specifically--it's not a lot to go on, but I'm not at liberty to share (and don't even bother PMing me.)

Since you seem to be connected could you punch someone over there and remind them that it is February 15, long past time to update their website to the February construction locations! 😉
 
I know many people would have a big problem with this, but I think the government needs to get involved.
The government was responsible for things like rural electrification and extending phone service to rural areas in the past, and they did a great job.
I would like to see tax incentives for any internet or cable provider to switch to fiber optic or let new providers lay fiber either by financial incentives or legislation that would encourage them. Like allowing new companies to lay fiber optic and offer cable tv without regard to "franchises"

To some extent, you're right. Everyone assumes that market demand is enough to drive innovation. But the expense of building infrastructure is too much for many carriers to bear--especially when it will take years to start seeing a return on investment. And then how many FTTP markets are gonna be in low-income areas? Without a mandate, those areas won't get the infrastructure improvements, and they will remain low-value, low-income neighborhoods.

But if the government does get involved, they will require carriers to share in building transport to the node, and allow consumers to choose their provider of choice (be it a local RBOC or national carrier) for last-mile deployment. That's what carriers want to avoid, because it essentially means Verizon/AT&T/(Sprint?) will do all the heavy lifting, and then smaller, leaner companies will share equally in revenues. Meanwhile, Fat Cable is still sitting pretty with protected franchises. Not really fair to the carrier.
