So she just happened to install the app and just happened to stumble across her daughters bedroom in a 1:50,000 chance? Nope, not buying it. There's something else to this story.

Too long in the odds for my taste too. Something else going on here.

So the old "admin" "password" wasn't changed and this is somehow a shocking result?
Yea, years ago it was common to see unprotected routers but I haven't come across one in ages. You would think people know that if you leave the standard username/password unchanged this type of thing WILL happen.

And this is why I don't use cloud based stuff. At least I'm assuming this is how it is streaming to the internet, unless the user was stupid enough to put it DIRECTLY on the internet and not behind a router.

Not to excuse those that got into the system, but why on earth would you put an internet-connected camera in a bedroom? Its just too risky.

Because kids sometimes do things without considering all of the consequences. I sometimes tape over my laptop cameras to prevent unauthorized use of them just as a precaution.

They said they got the IP from playing 'Minecraft on an 'unprotected' server'? How the heck did they determine this?
Anytime you play most games, you are exposing your IP address, all the apps on her iPad can exposes IPs as well, and not to mention any e-mails they sent can contain the IP.

Then, naturally, the server operator(?) did a port scan on the IP, found that the security cameras were wide open, accepting any connection(?) then they proceeded to reconfig the camera to broadcast to whatever site?

So, I dug some more, and the original store came from ABC "news". http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/we...aughters-room-featured-live/story?id=41283605 and reading a bit more, this is a load of crap.
I mean, the web cam was most likely doing what they said, but, everything else about this story stinks.

It all goes to show you cannot protect people from their own stupidity. The sad part is trying to blame it on someone else.

TBH I still haven't changed the defaults on my routers, too lazy and I kept forgetting what I set it to, wireless network has one

You don't need to be in the ghetto to get robbed, because the ghetto will come to you.
Yup, if nobody is home, neighbors would call cops if they saw something suspicious.
If I am home, then I have 357.
Most of my neighbors are armed.

I dunno, maybe it is, I've never seen one. Likely they got distracted since it takes about 2 hours drive to get from the ghetto to my neighborhood, and there are many much richer ones between here and there.

No security system here, except for my 5 dogs. When I'm home the security system is provided by Smith & Wesson!

I learned that the hard way, I live in what is considered a slightly higher end, but not rich neighborhood. Basically not a ghetto, but not a super target either. Yet thieves check all the cars every night. Forget to lock your doors ONCE, and you're getting stuff stolen. These are lazy thieves though, they don't really break into anything they just go for unlocked stuff, which is good in a way... I did forget my garage door opener in the car though, and got that stolen. They were probably going to come back later to empty the garage, but I disabled it and chained the door shut, I just operate it manually now.

One of these days I do want to put cameras - maybe even some in the house as extra precaution if someone did break in... but none of this ridiculous cloud stuff that anyone can access. I'd need to VPN in to access them. They would also be on a separate vlan that can't access the internet or the rest of the network, just the DVR. Actually, they don't even need access to the DVR, as the DVR accesses the cameras, not the other way around.

I do have a security system now though, so I doubt thieves would try to even get in knowing it's risky.

because the dad's a perv and likes to watch his daughter change when she gets home from school while he's still at work

If you look at that app you will notice a few such video cams that are focused on bedrooms like this yet when you look through the history nothing changes so they are probably just sets for "stuff".

No Mr. RIAA, I didn't download 'Maid in Manhattan'. I don't have a password on my router so it must have been hackers! Gosh, I'll have to put one on there!

More likely they had it setup for to view remotely and had Upnp enabled in the router to make it easy to setup and coincidentally easy for bad actors to get access to the cameras. Upnp is not worth the risk.

Beat me to it. External router likely had port forwarding or UPNP set, childs play to crack into an internal device at that point.

Just say NO to firewall pass-throughs!
